If there was a theme to this week, it might be What Should We Do About Foreign Influence of Our Elections?

On Tuesday, Facebook said that it identified a political influence campaign that was potentially built to disrupt the midterm elections. The company detected and removed 32 pages and fake accounts that had engaged in activity around divisive social issues.

On Thursday, the Senate Intelligence Committee held a hearing with social media experts on foreign influence operations aimed at disrupting U.S. elections. The Director of National Intelligence, Dan Coats, confirmed the intelligence community has seen evidence that Russia tried \"to hack into and steal information from candidates and government officials alike.\"

Also at Thursday's hearing, Microsoft's Tom Burt said hacking has happened to candidates without attributing it to Russia, and Sens. Claire McCaskill and Jeanne Shaheen confirmed that hacking has happened to them.

\nThe Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has launched its National Risk Management Center, which is intended to protect the nation’s banks, energy companies, and other critical infrastructure from potentially crippling cyber-attacks. The announcement came at a DHS-hosted cybersecurity conference, at which Vice President Mike Pence made the strongest statement yet from the Trump administration regarding Russian election interference. \nBaltimore, Chicago, Columbus, and Cincinnati filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration on Thursday, claiming that the White House’s “relentless campaign to sabotage and, ultimately, to nullify” Obamacare violates the Constitution’s provision that the president “shall take care that the laws be faithfully executed.” Click here for the full story.
\nA federal judge has once again ordered FEMA to extend its Transitional Shelter Assistance (TSA) program for survivors of Hurricanes Maria and Irma whose homes in Puerto Rico were destroyed. The TSA program - in which FEMA “provides direct payments to hotels to temporarily shelter survivors while they seek other long-term housing solutions” – is now set to expire on Aug. 31. \nPresident Trump intends to nominate meteorologist Kelvin Droegemeier as his top science and technology adviser at the White House, according to the Washington Post.
