If there’s anywhere that people should feel represented, it’s on the census. If used ethically, there are many ways that having accurate census data on gender identity and sexual orientation could help policy-makers develop more and better services for sexual minority communities. However, the wording of the census question would have gone very careful and should involve the input of people from the target communities. All that being said, at this point, I don’t trust this government to use this data for its intended positive purpose. Especially with Jeff Sessions’s “Religious Liberty Task Force” hunting down nonexistent threats to Christian values from the LBGTQ community.
