What’s the story?

Immigrants formerly protected from deportation by the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, come from all walks of life. Of the 690,000 currently enrolled in the soon-to-be terminated program, about 8,8000 are school teachers.

\r\n

One of those school teachers, America Moreno Jimenez, a high school teacher in Raleigh, NC will be attending tonight’s State of the Union address as the guest of Rep. David Price (D-NC). According to the CBS affiliate in Raleigh, WNCN, Jimenez was brought to the U.S. when she was 2 years old and has no memory of Mexico, where she was brought from:

\r\n

\r\n

Maria Rocha, reports NPR, is a third grade teacher in San Antonio, TX who was brought to the U.S. illegally by her grandmother when she was a toddler. She lived in fear until she was 25 and became DACA-eligible. Then she came out of the shadows, got her degree, and was able to fulfill her childhood dream of being a teacher. Now, all of that is at risk:

\"We've done things the right way. We were told to go to school, make a career. But now we're at the mercy of the stroke of a pen.\"

\r\n

The president has made an immigration proposal that would secure the future of the young people protected by DACA, but would also dedicate $25 billion to the border wall and alter other existing legal immigration programs. A bipartisan proposal has also emerged from the Problem Solvers Caucus which protects DACA recipients but dedicates less money to the border wall and paths to legal status for other groups, like immigrants formerly offered Temporary Protected Status.
