Should Federal Education Funds Follow a Student to the School of Their Family's Choice?

I sent one of my four children to a private school to get her a good education. Our situation has now changed and we are unable to make the sacrifice to continue with it so she now attends a public school. The schools that we were trying to get her out of by doing this were atrocious and would have been a backward move. Luckily the public schools we paid into with property taxes, and will continue to pay into when our kids leave school, have lifted their educational game. We also supplement their learning at home. If you are in a situation where the public system is fully funded and you wish to place your children in a private school then I would be ok with means tested grants being offered by the federal government in the same way that federal student loans should be grants. I think there are very low standard public school areas where low socioeconomic strata families would jump at a chance to get their kids a better education. It would help alleviate the number of students in the public system and make their dollars go further. The only way we are going to get out of this current situation where intellect is demonized is by educating our youth. We need to provide more than ever critical thinking tools to children. They will take it home to parents who were unlucky enough to miss out on it. So yes I think there is a place for helping students attend private schools. But it should be done in an intelligent way and not remove Funding from the public System.
