I can’t believe this is even a question. Many of these statues were erected during WWI by the United Daughters of the Confederacy, not in an effort to remember history, but as a means of continuing to humiliate and intimidate African Americans and to reaffirm white supremacy! The idea that history is suddenly going to repeat itself if these statues are taken down is ludicrous! The truth is that those who succeeded from the United States were traitors! Do we raise statues to honor or remember Benedict Arnold, Mary Surratt, or Tokyo Rose? In addition, in the last decade alone the cost of maintaining these statues comes to over $40 million tax payer dollars. Wouldn’t that money be better spent on say, feeding the 16 million children in this country that don’t have food? If we are going be brag about being the greatest country in the world, maybe we should do something to earn it, like deciding that living breathing human beings are more important than pieces of bronze or zinc!
