My children live in a highly diverse community in Northeast Los Angeles. They attend public school and have access to a fairly vast array of ideas, courtesy of life in any large US city. But, our school, struggling though it may be within the realities of COVID and ongoing LAUSD funding issues, in no way teaches its kids to hate or distrust its country. In fact, by engaging the kids on issues of civil rights, US history, science and the arts, the students are encouraged to both love their community AND find hope in their futures. Any claims otherwise are made in ignorance or out of a desire to create conflict where none need exist. Rather than denigrate the work of educators, how about increase funding for them, and remake laws that siphon much needed dollars away from public education.
