The reason for racial disparities is simple. People who are poor live in poorer areas and suffer from everything else that goes with being poor such as poorer nutrition, housing as well as poorer access to mental and physical health services. The ones who are working work at jobs the financially stable would not consider. Those jobs also are usually part time and do not offer health benefits. And even if they do, it doesn’t matter. They cannot afford to take off when they are sick, so they don’t. So it becomes a lose-lose situation. They are sick and need to be home to recover but can’t because they won’t get paid if they take off because they are not offered paid sick leave. This is not new problem. The whole system needs to be redone in a way in which ALL can benefit. Not just the lucky ones.
