If we are truly one nation under God, then we are a nation born with original sin. So how does a nation achieve salvation when it willfully embraces the sins of its past? It’s time to move on from our sinful and horrific past. This does not mean we erase history. America is carrying wounds that run hundreds of years deep. We cling to names and symbols associated with treason and we call it “heritage.” Renaming the installations does not take away or diminish the proud accomplishments of past solders as the President has suggested. It does quite the opposite. It associates all those who serve or have served - myself included - at one of these bases with unity, democracy and freedom for all people. There are so many heroes in US history that deserve the type of honor we have given to traitors.
