This country was founded on the principle that everyone should have to obey the same laws and suffer the same punishments if they don't. The "equality" spoken of in the Declaration of Independence was meant to mean that people IN the government have NO rights or privileges superior to people OUT of the government. The whole idea of government agents being allowed to do things that ordinary citizens would go to jail for, is a throw-back to medieval dark-ages feudal societies in which the "ruling class" could impose rules on everyone else, but they themselves did not have to obey. (Notice that Nancy Pelosi famously claimed just such feudal rights for herself and her "ruling class" in Congress.) Drifting away from the original intent of the Constitution is what has caused all the major ills in our society.
