There is no quicker way to divide “one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all” than to use the law to reward the criminality of one’s own supporters. The law needs to neutral in its creation and consistent in its application. If it is used to reward one’s friends or in punishing one’s foes, justice loses all meaning to the society it was to protect. Trump’s promises to his rally attendees to lessen or relieve them of the legal consequences sets the stage for a state of affairs where the unofficial enforcers are unleashed to decide right and wrong, to become the police, prosecutors, judges and jury and to inflict summary judgement as well as punishment. A free society cannot survive where equal justice under law becomes a mockery of itself and the common good is replaced by the private interests of the powerful.
