The U.S. Senate has voted to acquit President Donald Trump on both House-passed impeachment articles.

Article 1: Abuse of Power

52 Republicans voted NOT GUILTY.
47 Democrats and 1 Republican (Mitt Romney) voted GUILTY.

Romney is the first senator in U.S. history to vote to convict a president from the same party in an impeachment trial.

Article 2: Obstruction of Congress

53 Republicans voting NOT GUILTY.
47 Democrats voting GUILTY.

A conviction would have required a two-thirds majority. Senate Republicans have a 53-47 majority in the chamber.

Following the vote, Trump tweeted:

Ahead of the vote, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) said:

\"The United States Senate was made for moments like this. The framers predicted that factional fever might dominate House majorities from time to time. They knew the country would need a firewall to keep partisan flames from scorching our Republic. So they created the Senate.\"

\"We will reject this incoherent case that comes nowhere near justifying the first presidential removal in history. This partisan impeachment will end today.\"
