What's the story?

Opening arguments continue today in the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump.
Yesterday, House managers began to formally make their case that the Senate should convict Trump on two articles of impeachment: abuse of power and obstruction of Congress.

Some key quotes from Thursday's trial:

\"Right matters and truth matters. Otherwise we are lost,” Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA), the lead House impeachment manager.

\nHouse impeachment manager Rep. Sylvia Garcia (D-TX): \"Trump has suggested that all the witnesses are Never Trumpers. That couldn't be further from the truth. These US officials are brave public servants. It is wrong, just flat wrong, to suggest they were doing anything other than testifying out of a sense of duty.\" She also attempted to debunk the administration's claim that the Biden family was engaged in corruption in Ukraine, arguing that \"Trump didn't care about any of this until 2019,\" when Biden looked like a 2020 frontrunner.
\nImpeachment manager Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) cited calls made between Lev Parnas and Trump's personal lawyer, Rudy Giuliani, as evidence of Giuliani keeping the president \"informed about what was going on\" regarding a pressure campaign against Kiev.
\nImpeachment manager Rep. Zoe Lofgren (D-CA): \"Mr. Giuliani is the President's personal lawyer. He represented Trump with his knowledge & consent. The evidence confirms that Giuliani and Trump were in constant contact... and that both U.S. and Ukrainian officials knew Mr. Giuliani was the 'key' to Ukraine.\"

Some highlights from the first day of testimony:

Lead House impeachment manager Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) said that Democratic senators should not consider calling Hunter Biden to testify in exchange for other administration witnesses.

“That trade is not on the table,” Senator Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) told reporters during a break in the trial.

Schiff also laid out how \"three days in July\" — the 24th, 25th, and 26th — tell \"so much of the story\" about Trump's attempts to solicit foreign election interference that they alone are \"grounds for removal\" as president.

“President Trump solicited foreign interference in our democratic elections, abusing the power of his office to seek help from abroad to improve his re-election prospects at home. President Trump withheld hundreds of millions of dollars in military aid to a strategic partner at war with Russia to secure foreign help with his re-election. In other words, to cheat.”

“Would you like to see that written record?” Schiff said at one point about a key telephone call. “Well, there’s a good way to find out what happened on that call because it’s in writing. Is there any question why they’re withholding this from Congress? Is there any question about that?”

\nHouse Democrats’ impeachment managers include Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA), Judiciary Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-NY), and Reps. Jason Crow (D-CO), Val Demings (D-FL), Sylvia Garcia (D-TX), Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and Zoe Lofgren (D-CA).
Early Wednesday, the GOP-controlled Senate adopted rules for its trial, after killing off all Democratic-introduced amendments.

What are the rules?

Evidence collected by the House won't be automatically admitted for the trial—senators will vote, later, on which materials to admit.
House impeachment managers – the prosecutors – and Trump’s defense team will have 24 hours, split over three days, for opening arguments.
The question of witnesses will be addressed after opening arguments.
