What’s the story?

The Senate adopted the rules for the impeachment trial of President Donald Trump on a party line vote of 53-47.
All Democratic-introduced amendments were killed by Senate Republicans.
The rules, introduced by Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), give each side 24 hours for opening arguments, postpone the question of calling witnesses until later in the trial, and requires a vote on whether to admit evidence collected as part of the House’s inquiry.

What does the resolution say?

Evidence collected by the House won't be automatically admitted for the trial—senators will vote, later, on which materials to admit.
House impeachment managers – the prosecutors – and Trump’s defense team will have 24 hours, split over three days, for opening arguments.
The question of witnesses will be addressed after the opening arguments.

Critics

\"The reason this was kept hidden is that this does not prescribe a process for a fair trial,\" House Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff (D-CA), the lead impeachment manager, told reporters Tuesday.

\"This is not the process for a fair trial. This is a process for a rigged trial.\"

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) said he plans to propose amendments to the resolution.
\"The McConnell rules seem to be designed by President Trump for President Trump. It asks the Senate to rush through as fast as possible and makes getting evidence as hard as possible,\" Schumer said on the Senate floor Tuesday.

\"The McConnell resolution will result in a rushed trial with little evidence in the dark of night.\"

Supporters

\"Overall, it aligns closely with the rules package approved 100-0 during the Clinton trial,\" said Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT). \"If attempts are made to vote on witnesses prior to opening arguments, I would oppose those efforts.\"
The White House also praised McConnell’s resolution.

\"House Democrats insisted that the impeachment process needed to be sped up, and now that the McConnell resolution takes them at their word, they suddenly want to slow it all down. House Democrats can't have it both ways,\" said White House legislative director Eric Ueland.

I fear that a citizenry focused on the “here-and-now” is easily tricked by short term benefits that have negative long-term consequences. I fear that our legislators are more concerned about buffing their constituents than looking out for the long-term welfare of our country- and are way too eager to provide those short-term benefits to the “here-and-now” crowd.\nI fear that honor is generally being sacrificed/replaced by expediency. I hear politicians eloquently argue for one side of an issue and later, when it’s to their benefit, just as eloquently argue for the opposite side. OK, so they are good at arguing- but what is that they actually believe? What is it that they actually stand for? An honorable person has values that persist even when it is not convenient or expedient. An honorable person has a moral compass that stops them from doing something wrong even if it is not illegal.
