We all know exactly how this “trial” will end regardless of any evidence or testimony. Many senators aren’t even pretending to appear impartial anymore. Mitch McConnell has been blatant about working with Trump and the White House to develop a strategy that will ensure acquittal. But I am most concerned that a lack of removal will be interpreted by Trump as evidence of complete exoneration and proof that there is nothing wrong or illegal about pressuring a foreign government to investigate a political opponent in hopes of damaging that opponent’s campaign. This will all only serve to embolden Trump to continue to push the boundaries of what is considered moral, ethical, and legal behavior for a president. After all, there were no consequences for his actions with Russia during his first campaign. If there are no consequences for his actions again this time, then we as a nation will be responsible for creating the monster that will serve as our president because we will have failed to hold the man accountable.
