Another option that Pelosi and the Democratic leadership could consider was discussed by a professor of constitutional law. In this scenario, the House could withhold delivery of the Articles of Impeachment if the Senate would agree to censure the President. In this case, the penalty is reduced but so is the standard being lowered to 50% plus 1. It would deprive the President of a victory lap if the Senate were to acquit him of the impeachment articles, which is overwhelmingly likely, but still be a reprimand to avoid similar future actions. Republicans in the Senate would have a more viable position for Trump's base and both parties would benefit from the elimination of a trial which would impact senators facing primaries. If the Senate fails to agree, the House can still deliver the Articles.
