Why do or don't you support America’s new fossil fuel investments?
      (EXTRARPT) A new report found that the U.S. is responsible for over one-third of the global oil and gas expansion planned by midcentury, despite claims of climate leadership by Washington.
* The report, titled "Planet Wreckers: How 20 Countries' Oil and Gas Extraction Plans Risk Locking in Climate Chaos," was published on Tuesday by Oil Change International.
* The study found that the planned developments and exploration would add 173 billion tons of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere, the equivalent of the lifetime emissions of 1,100 coal-fired power plants.
Who is responsible?
* The U.S. is the front-runner, followed by Canada, Russia, Iran, China, and Brazil in the size of new oil and gas project plans. The United Arab Emirates, host of the U.N.'s annual climate summit this November, is seventh on the list.
* The report found that five countries, including the U.S., Canada, Australia, Norway, and the U.K., will be responsible for over half of all new gas and oil project expansion by 2050. These countries, and more in the Global North, are responsible for 92% of global carbon emissions, as reported in The Lancet Planetary Health last year.
      "It's simple: when you are in a hole, the first step is to stop digging. The climate crisis is global in nature, but is atrociously unjust. A handful of the world's richest nations are risking our future by willingly ignoring the calls to rapidly phase out fossil fuels."
