I think some nuance is required here, because I think the gig economy is the future. Right now it’s Uber drivers, but this is going to keep growing. Being an independent contractor means higher taxes because the company doesn’t pay the taxes and pushes it off onto the worker, so forcing people to be considered independent contractors when they’re not really empowered to call the shots about their work circumstances is sleazy by the companies. However, I feel that in the future, I think benefits will be even more divorced from employers than they are now. Independent contractors need a bill or rights with an eye on this future.
