The possible conflict with US Constitutional separation of church and state and potential for "charter" schools to become businesses whose first concern is for profit rather than education are valid concerns. I also know from bitter first and second hand experience that parental decisions are frequently not the best decisions for their offspring and that so-called "education" which requires students to study disciplines that may or may not be applicable to their adult lives and careers can be a negative influence on youthful development as well. US "education" is critically in need of major overhauls, and programs like "school choice" will most likely compound, rather than alleviate the situation.
