One day while at the grocery store, there was a elderly man in a wheelchair there, with a small coin purse in his palm, and I asked him if I could be of any help to him, and he said, "Well, I was going to buy myself a $3.29 chinese plate from the deli, but I just picked up my medicine, and I haven't even bought my disposable diapers yet, and so I guess I'm done." The look of despair, and shock in his eyes made my heart literally hurt (extreme heartache) for him. I wheeled him to the chinese deli, and bought he and myself that plate he wanted, and shared it together. Then, I spoke to the Mgr of the grocery store, and pleaded with him to allow the man to get his disposable diapers he needed, and so the mgr took the man to the isle, and got him what he needed. I've never forgotton that. I've witnessed many senior citizens since then when they are attempting to get their meds, or pay rent, buy groceries, gas, or even a $1 birthday card for their grandchildren, they just don't have it. These aren't people who squander their money. These are people, whether senior, or disabled, or living with an illness, and need for the companies (many, many companies could) and and all of us who can help, to help. Please help.

I would suggest not voting for the candidate who thinks 47% of Americans are lazy. These seniors are in the 47% of Americans he was talking about.

I don't beleive that he was talking about the seniors who have worked their entire lives. social security is not an entitlement program. is is a forced retiredment program which the working people are forced to participate in if they are employed.

Yes it became law a long time ago but originally when I was young and paid into it, it was individual accounts and if you never worked you would not collect from it. They changed that and started giving amounts to a spouse even if they never paid into Social Security and other things. I am really angry about that one. We deserve what we paid into the fund. I paid for over 40 years into that fund expecting to retire with at least Social Security to hear people say it is forced and yada yada...

Oh and if you had your own business you could pay into the fund or from any exempt job as well. It was up to the individual. Those that hire workers in the home that fall under certain parameters are required to pay this as well. It was created so everyone could at least have something to retire on but changes were made and exceptions. It really makes me mad.

Geraldine people don't just get social security for being retired, they get it for disabilities as well... The reason that people have to participate in it is so that by the time the able bodied working person reaches retirement age, they have money to live off of. I think you are soley misunderstood. I am 35 going on 36 and I have been on disability since 2001 and I don't know where I'd be without it and I'm on it not because I'm lazy but because I can't work and I'm terminally ill with...

I am 35 going on 36 and I have been on disability since 2001 and I don't know where I'd be without it and I'm on it not because I'm lazy but because I can't work and I'm terminally ill with life threatening medical condition. Look at everyone who is on it for the same reason I am or they have a mental illness that prevents them from being in society and holding a job... it's their only source of income. So no it's not just a retirement program.. it's a primary source of income for those who truly need it. Wouldn't you like to have something to look forward to living on when retire?

Social security was not meant to be something a person could live on. A person should have some type of savings and investment that they had been putting money into for years.

Right now our government continues to print money and spend it on stupidity. Like sending billions of dollars oversea to countries that hate us for one. The more they print, the more our dollar loses value and inflation hurts the poor, not the rich.

I haven't invested or saved enough money myself, so I'll be working during my golden year just like the other millions that didn't save.

Social Security is not an entitlement except maybe the disability part. We all worked hard for those payroll deductions. While we were working hard putting our money into the fund the politicians spent our money and raided the trust fund. How about a lump sum of all my contributions plus interest since 1963. Someone should look up the definition of an "entitlement."

I too see how seniors have to make ends meet on their limited budget just so they can have a roof over their heads and government wants to keep cutting.

This lady reminds me of my beloved mother that I miss so much, and she had no money left over for anything after we payed her living expenses with how little she recieved. Thankfully my sister Sandy and I were able to get her all her extras, these people worked thier asses off all thier lives and took care of us, to recieve nothing, it makes no sense really our govrnment is sick! so they send money to help everyone in other countries, and ignore our own people in need, it is BS,.It really disgusts me.

My mother gets SS and she's struggling like hell. I help as much as I can, but there are times when I'm limited. She and many others like her have worked all their adult lives and now they find themselves trying to work again just to eat! Pinching pennies to get your rent, utility bills, or grocery just shouldn't be. And besides, if we can help get an increase for their cost of living they can continue to live independent from their adult children and the adult children can continue to walk around their home bucket naked and have company! No seriously folks have a heart just do it!

It is so sad to see so many disabled and elderly people trying to live on 603 to 700 dollars a month which by the way is way below poverty level. They also do not get dental benefits which makes hospital and doctor visits to sky rocket due to tooth infections. One doctor told me they cannot put on the record that they were treating for tooth infection which nearly killed me but instead could treat it if they call it chronic sinus infections. One doctor told me they cannot put on the record that they were treating for tooth infection which nearly killed me but instead could treat it if they call it chronic sinus infections. Hundreds of thousands of tax payer money that could be used to give seniors and disabled folks a cost of living increase so they can at least pay their bills. The really really sad part is every time seniors or disabled people get a raise in social security if they receive food stamps or disability they are both lowered so there really wasn't any raise at all. I say increase the cost of living for seniors and disabled folks and don't turn right around and take it away by reducing their food stamps or disability checks!

It's hard to watch my parents who have worked all their lives scrimp on their SS benefits. With the cost of medicine, food, gas and everything else going up what they receive is just not enough!

Maybe it would be easier to just reduce the cost of everything by even a mere 10 cents.
