Ridiculous! Can't even wrap my head around the mentality that makes this happen.

Intent is the critical issue here. Accidents, mistakes made by children should be treated with common sense. The judgment shown by these individuals evidences that they are not rational beings.

Its sad that lawyers (district attorneys, assistant district attorneys, state attorneys, assistant state attorneys) are quick to charge someone with a crime without thoroughly investigating the circumstances. Save us tax payers some money by targeting real criminals... kidnappers and child molesters. It's law enforcement job to investigate a case and the state's job to decide if charges come forward. They dropped the ball in the investigation stage.

America has a problem distinguishing between adults and children.

This was obviously a harnless experiment, that was undertaken, apparently in an area away from other students. Why punish her for something she probably had no idea was illegal. Shame on this action.

What year are we living in? Sounds like knee-jerk response inc. in action.
The only response should have been- with her teacher and responders present- a small discussion on how to avoid mixing volatile chemicals.

First of all, "WE Must Thank, GOD!"
Second, according to what I read, since the instuctor of the class represents the school/district/students in the classroom should not have been held accountable for an experiment gone wrong in a learning situation on school grounds where the class is/was being taught on a regular school day be the grounds for an arrest.
Nor, should this young lady have been arrested, reputation blemished/LABELED, and/or punished for using her brain in a science...

Nor, should this young lady have been arrested, reputation blemished/LABELED, and/or punished for using her brain in a science project! Science deals with "What IF's"; "WHAT WILL HAPPEN IF's"; "HOW DOES IT WORK TO DO OR MAKE IT WORK"; "WHAT WILL BE HE OUTCOME OF DOING SOMETHING?" ETC.,
FINALLY, IT IS WONDERFUL TO SEE THAT A SCIENTIFIC MINDED INDIVIDUAL REACHED BACK TO HELP HER TO USE HER INQUISITIVE MIND OF SCIENCE TO OFFER HER AN OPPORTUNITY TO PUT IT TO USE FOR THE GOOD OF MANKIND. THE QUOTE, "A MIND IS A TERRIBLE THING TO WASTE" IS SAVED! THANK YOU SIR! TO THE YOUNG LADY, "EVEN THE MOST BRILLIANT PEOPLE IN HISTORY HAVE AT ONE POINT IN THIER LIVES HAD AN EXPERIMENT GO WRONG. THEY MAY NOT HAVE AT SCHOOL. THEY WERE IN HOSPITALS, COLLEGE LABS, COPORATE LABS, PRIVATE LABS, ETC.., THE SCHOOL DISTRICT MEMBERS SHOULD RECOGNIZE NO ONE WAS HURT, INTENTIONNALLY, NOR WERE THERE ANY REQUIRES DISCLOSURES FROM THE SCHOOL TO THE FAMILY PARENTS/GUARDIANS SUBMITTED GIVING YOUR CHILD AND HER CLASSMATES CONSTRUCTIVE NOTICE THAT THEIR SCHOOL LAB IS A POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS LOCATION ON SCHOOL GROUNDS IN WHICH ANY STUDENT PARTICIPATING IN SCIENCE PROJECTS HELD LIABLE FOR ASSIGNMENTS USING THEIR CREATIVITY IN AN UNCONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT WITH THE OPTION TO DECLINE AN ASSIGNMENT OR COMPLETE AN ASSIGNMENT REGARDLESS OF WHETHER NOT OTHERS MAY BE IN HARMS WAY....THINK ABOUT IT...PERHAPS THE OPEN LABS NEED A CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT FOR FIRST TIME EXPERIMENTS TO PROTECT ALL PARTIES INVOLVED. BEST OF LUCK TO YOUR WONDERFUL FUTURE, YOUNG LADY!

The police, authorities for the matter, should consider the background of the student: Is the experiment in line with her studies? What is her teacher's stake? Otherwise what is the purpose of being a science student if research can be that questionable?
