Eastern Region Gliding School made me become a better Canadian citizen.
With no pretention intended, and professionnally speaking, i navigated through aviation since 1976 and always felt that i was one step ahead of many people in major part because of my participation to this program.
Now that i am two years away from retirement from aviation, i can only wish that some young aviation inspired fellows will train to take my place in the business.
The Air Cadet Gliding Program must survive
Wishing you all the best.
This is a great thing for our young people in our community, hope it lasts.
Keep up the good work. Air Cadets is great for young people.
some one should ask Commander Hadfield what he would think, he was accomplished glider. See where the program helped get him!!!!!!
I have worked hard as an air cadet to get a glider pilot scholarship, but now because of this, its possible I wont be able to take my cadets up to experience the thrill of an amazing glider flight.....the main reason I wanted this so bad was to teach and show cadets why flight is amazing and why they should pursue a career in aviation. What's an air cadet when you take away the air component? A group of hopeful youth with shattered dreams.
I feel exactly the same way :(
573 Andrew Mynarski VC RCACS is giving their full support to this :)
As an 825 RCACS ex-member, I 100% agree with this statement
The gliding program has been of profound influence within our Hadfield family. Count 4 who went on to become pilots, and 1 who took his training all the way to space. My daughter has been counting the days until she is old enough to join Air Cadets. Without the glider program, Cadets would not be the same. How do I tell her that this wonderful opportunity has been closed to her?
Pat, don't let it become history! Write your, MP's write the Air Cadet League and tell them what you think.
I was an Air Cadet as a youth and both my boys are now enjoying the benefits of this program I volunteer at cadets and have seen first hand how much the gliding program means to these kids. Gliding gets these kids up in the air instead of on the streets we need more youth involvement not less
The air cadet program was one of the best things that happened to me as a child. To this day I still talk about the gliding program as it was a great experience
If they cancel the cadet program it will take the point out of air cadets. I didnt join only to find that they might cancel gliding only a year into my time at cadets!
As an Air Cadet in the 70's I was truly inspired by the program. Started out as ground crew, moved up to flight instructor and tow pilot. My first paying flying job!! What a high! Now a professional aviator flying the fastest passenger jet...a Citation X. I am still on a high after over 33 years and still aviating. I love my profession. Mentoring and feeding our youth passions are the beginning of capturing dreams. The cadet program is a level playing field. Anyone can join with...

All you have to do show up with a passion. This is an open door for all of our youth to step into their greatness. It is so tragic that now even our government is no long thinking generationally. Canada as a nation will falter if we do not find ways to help our youth of today navigate a career path.
And CFI at North Bay in 1983!
Oh yes that too!!!
I was an Air Cadet and achieved the rank of SGT. While there, one of my favorite moments was being able to go on glider familiarization flights. If i was still in Air Cadets I would have definitely attempted to achieve both licenses. The ACGP is a tremendous influence on the lives of so many young people and I as a former Air Cadet would hate to see it removed. Please, Do Not Take The "Air" Out Of "Air Cadets"!
I was also in my seventh year and always tried to get on the list for glider familiarization flights every year
I have been asked to sign this petition, and I wouldn't have any problem doing that if I could find somewhere, either here or anywhere on the web where this is in fact "fact". Can someone put the link to the news story on here for reading? Thanks.
I attended to Mr. Colin Moore when I worked at the retirement residence where he lives. He is the founder of this program, and was very proud of his accomplishment and his continued involvement in the program over the years. It would be a shame to deny future cadets the experience that he fought so hard to provide for them. I know that it would break his heart if he knew that cancelling it was even a possibility. I hope the decision will be reconsidered.
I can not sign your petition about the gliding program as it is not accurate. The federal government has never financial supported the air cadet gliding program so they can't cut it. This program is funded by the league.
thanks for the info. i was wondering that too. however, in this description, air cadet league of canada is mentioned
You are inaccurate in your assumption... The Air Cadet League owns the gliders... the DND pays for the officers, the training, the fuel, the maintenance... they cover all of the huge costs... So yes they can cut it... they remove all the full time positions, decommission the summer courses (which they pay for) and effectively end the program.
As a former Air Cadet, I wold hate to see this program cancelled. It was always something that I had to look forward to, and work towards. It's really a shame that DND would consider cutting something like this in order to save money, there are so many other places that could have the funding reduced. The cadets are an investment in the youth of this country and cancelling funding for these programs is crazy. Why not cut somewhere else (NDHQ staff comes to mind), or maybe MP's or senator's salaries.
