Dolphins are vulnerable kindred spirits that are already being hurt by our noise, over fishing, and pollution. We have a moral obligation to turn all of this around.

Shalom!

I love dolphins and dolphins enjoy interacting with humans. At a top scientific convention in 2012, these scientists recommend that dolphins be re-classified and granted the same rights as humans. Together, we can end the brutal killing of more than 20,000 dolphins in Japan.

Winner of the 2009 Oscar for best feature documentary, The Cove follows a team of activists and filmmakers as they infiltrate a heavily-guarded cove in Taiji, Japan. In this remote village they witness and document activities deliberately being hidden from the public: More than 20,000 dolphins and porpoises are being slaughtered each year and their meat, containing toxic levels of mercury, is being sold as food in Japan, often times labeled as whale meat.
Under the direction of the film’s Ric O’Barry, Save Japan Dolphins.org/Earth Island Institute is actively working in Japan to shut down this brutal practice.

Dear Sir,

It is with the strongest condemnation that I feel obligated to write to you about in respect of the treatment of dolphins in Japan. Please would you take a moment to watch the following video at this link, the content of which you may not have been previously aware of: http://thecovemovie.com/WatchTheTrailer.htm.

In the video you will see clear irrefutable proof of the most hideously cruel live butchering of dolphins, whose carcasses are then further butchered and sold as 'whale' meat to various food distributors, to end up in supermarkets, falsely labeled.

The mass killing of these beautiful, intelligent and harmless species is yet another scar on the international image and indeed reputation of Japan, and the Japanese Government. It is quite possible that the majority of Japanese people do not even know about this vile crime and if they did, would be as horrified as anyone else.

It is difficult, if not impossible, to watch the video and not feel totally enraged, hugely disappointed and revolted that in this day and age, a nation such as Japan can permit such an indecency and crime.

In closing, may I point out that the agony and suffering of these creatures is plain to see, and yet the individuals involved in this repugnant atrocity show no mercy and no sorrow.

The assumption that animals are without rights and the illusion that our treatment of them has no moral significance is a positively outrageous example of human crudity and barbarity. Universal compassion is the only guarantee of morality.

I trust you will take immediate action to raise this issue with your Government ministers, and those that should be acting in the prosecution of those involved and that this activity will be outlawed immediately in Japan. In the meantime I am raising a campaign on Facebook.com and signatures will be sent to your Embassy in further protest.

This matter will not 'go away' and myself and many, many other people will not rest until this vile and unnacceptable practise is stopped for good.

Of course, neither myself or anyone else holds you or your staff, nor the majority of decent Japanese people in any way responsible for this matter but clearly, those who are responsible must be brought to justice, and this act must not be repeated in 2013, nor at any other time in the future.

Wishing yourself, your staff and their families Christmas good tidings, and that 2013 will be a happier year for Japan - not least the dolphins and whales that your countrymen remorselessly and illegally persecutes.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Yours sincerely,

Andy Martin
