I am not racist or against immigrants, no matter how they come here. But the point is, it's a factual statement. If you immigrate illegally, you are an illegal immigrant. 'Undocumented' implies that our government has somehow lapsed in not noticing them--this is not the point. We do allow immigrants, but they have to go through a process. Skipping the line is not okay and avoiding a factual and correct term in order to avoid stepping on toes is condoning what they are doing, which is...

'Undocumented' implies that our government has somehow lapsed in not noticing them--this is not the point. We do allow immigrants, but they have to go through a process. Skipping the line is not okay and avoiding a factual and correct term in order to avoid stepping on toes is condoning what they are doing, which is breaking the law.

If someone runs a red light, then yes, they are driving illegally. But we don't call them an illegal driver because that doesn't describe a constant situation or state. If someone doesn't have a driver's license, then they are an illegal driver because they are in a state of illegality, not just a one-time offender. Illegal immigrants live in America illegally and are likewise in a state of illegality. We aren't saying the humans are illegal--being a human is always legal. However, they are illegal immigrants.

This petition just spotlights a major issue in American culture right now. Our need to be uber-PC might avoid stepping on a few toes right now but ultimately will devastate our morals in the long run. Let’s be honest—the truth is sometimes hard. A rapist is not a nonconsensual sex partner. A drug dealer is not an undocumented pharmacist. No one is worried about hurting their feelings clearly.

I understand that America is truly the land of promise for many. I sympathize with many citizens, especially those in Mexico oppressed under a corrupt government and stuck in a cycle of poverty. But in our compassion, let us not condone breaking the law and teach that laws are only to be followed when things are easy. This petition skews the issue. Rather than a simple term, we should be focusing on how we can aid oppressed people and streamline the immigration process to make it feasible for foreigners, especially Mexican citizens to live in America.

I am not anti-immigrant. My family immigrated from Germany in the 60s and we did it legally. There is no reason why other people should not be called out for skipping the process and breaking the line when people like my family follow America's policy.

Actually, no criminal laws have been broken by individuals who entered the country without documents. Your statement shows bitterness rather than facts.

I agree lets call them by the name that they are lawbreaking, tax money stealing, immigrants that come here illegally by breaking the law set forth in our land

Actually, the correct legal term is "illegal alien". The word "immigrant" means one who intends to settle in a place, which illegal aliens could not do because their presence here is illegal, meaning against the law. The word "alien" means only that they are not US citizens. Therefore, any term other than "illegal alien" is legally incorrect.

There is a lot of difference between unauthorised immigrants who have lied - show me a journalist who has never lied? - and convicted bank robbers! We need a general amnesty for those who study English and the law of the land and become citizens!

You all pledged your self to the flag. Abide by the laws, pay your dues and taxes. Guess what people, if you break the law your butt will be punished my fellow Americans. So if and Illegal breaks the law what should we do about that. Don't the laws of the land apply to those who visit and sneak into our land? Wake up people, awhile ago, America imported people against there will, and denied them all rights and privileges , these people come use the system to take from those who have paid...

NO, I will not sign this...I don't agree with it. People who do not follow the proper channels to come to America ARE "ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS"! They are law breakers, our laws routinely put law breakers in jail. In cases of people coming into this country ILLEGALLY, they are sent back to where they came from. Since when does America reward law breakers? If America has started that, then I can go rob a bank and if I don't get enough money, will the government GIVE me more money? If NO, why not?

The government is "FAST TRACKING" unlawful people (AKA. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS) so why not fast track bank robbers, or attempted murders, shouldn't they have another chance to "bump off" that person the attempted to kill? Sounds ridiculous doesn't it? No more so than the US GIVING these lawbreakers (ILLRGAL IMMIGRANTS) free citizenship. Which will come with free housing, free food stamps, free doctors, medicine and last but definitely worse OUR JOBS! Our children's, and grandchildren's futures. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS ARE LAWBREAKERS, DON'T SUGAR COAT IT!

I will absolutely NOT sign this petition. The AP's decision is retarded. I now have even less confidence in what they report, than I did before. They, the New York Times, and everyone else should continue to use the term "Illegal Immigrant", because it is spot-on accurate. There are people who immigrate here, illegally. Hence, they are illegal immigrants. And yes, I would call a driver who ran a red light, an "illegal driver". They are a driver who did something illegal. And how in...

And how in the hell did some linguist determine the phrase is "legally inaccurate"? And since when is the truth a slur? Is calling someone who vandalizes, a vandal, a slur? Someone who litters, a litterbug? What the hell is going on in our society when the truth can't be tolerated?

Call them what they are. ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS! If they want to feel welcome in this country, they should be required what my ancestors were required to do: Fill out the proper documentation, take an oath of allegiance and learn to speak English. Otherwise, they are illegal and should be deported to where they came from!

Lee Selisky

They are illegal! To use any other term is dishonest. Most of the current U.S. citizens immigrated to this country from somewhere else including my great grandparents.. I am not anti-immigrant, I just want them to come in the front door.

Ok. You don't like that term. So let's call it what it ready is. THIS IS AN INVASION OF OUR COUNTY!!! And what do most countries do when they are invaded?
Well people they fight against the invasion. So if you don't want them called illegal immigrants, then let's call them what they really are and mount a response to our country being invaded. That way we would be calling them what they are.
