Before the Titanic went down they asked the Engineer, "will the ship sink?" The engineer replies, "it's a mathematical certainty". Think ahead people. The future requires planning.

I think he should be given it, just because he has a mental illness shouldn't mean a thing (least in this case). As horrible as this will most likely come out, when the time does come for the young man (or he might be lucky and live till hes very old) couldn't they take back parts (or least the heart) if it was ok from the parents, so it could yet again save another life?

Dave. It's nothing personal. It's just the facts. Our economy can not afford all this money spent on healthcare to make bionic geriatrics. My view is purely economic. We can't give all things to all people. It's just not reality. I'm not saying shoot old people, I'm just saying don't waste OUR money on unnecessary surgeries.

Yeah you are right Tom, give my tax money to corrupt bankers instead and while we are at it lets pay for our politicians to fly all over the world on our National holiday after all every country sends their politicians to other countries on their national holiday dont they. Also why dont we pay our incompetent prime minister twice the salary of the US president. I totally agree with you deny people life saving surgeries as the corrupt bankers, property speculators and politicians need it...

I just hope you do not need a life saving operation one day and be told to go home and die as the bankers need the money more than you do.

Completely ridiculous. Totally taken out of context. No one should be denied a surgery. No one. Not an 80 year old, not a 23 year old kid who hasn't even begun his life. That's it plain and simple. You are completely out of line. Did he say to give more money to bankers and politicians? That is a whole other separate issue entirely. Please don't put words in his mouth.... We have 2 autistic kids. So the subject of autism is a sensitive one for us. I have seen people put up petitions for dogs that got more support than this issue.

Here is an idea Tom... Why not use your energy and push for the government to stop giving useless subsidies to the oil companies along with the tax loopholes for giant companies such as G.E.. This useless (not conservative spending)could be then allocated to the national debt along with the other programs(including healthcare) in need. Just a thought.

An otherwise healthy young man denied an essential surgery with no real reasoning behind it is disgraceful.

Our Medicare system gives artificial hips to 80 year olds. Why can't this kid get a heart. The baby-boomers created this messed up society and environmental wasteland that in my mind causes autism and that generation is likely the one denying his heart transplant. The kid deserves the heart over some elderly person that has already lived a prosperous and fulfilling life.

Tom, I understand your point but sometimes your delivery sucks. What if someone was to tell you that an 80 year with a new hip stood a better chance of being a productive member of society than a 23 year Autistic boy with a new heart? Being the father of two autistic children I would think this type of comment would make you irrate! Yet you so easily make comments like this about the elderly, mind you they are the ones that paid into the system their entire lives and now finally benefit from...

Should the boy be denied a heart? Absolutely not, but at the same time an elderly person should not be denied a procedure that will take their pain away at the expense of that boy receving one. You'll make a great nurse, maybe when your patients turn 80 years old the hospital will allow you to shoot them and put them out of their misery and avoid them milking the system they paid into for 60 or so years!

On what grounds is the consultant denying life saving treatment? Your son has a right to medical treatment and is protected by the Irish constitution not to mention the right to life itself, whatever the quality of life. I can well believe it. I carry a donor card and I don't care who my organs go to. That is so discriminatory. I would get a second and third opinion asap if possible and you will probably find there will be varying opinions there too. I hope he gets what he needs if not...

Have a look at the Mayo Clinic web site, there are various conditions listed in alpha order, from diagnosis to treatment. Have you contacted the Irish or British Heart Foundations. I will ask others to join the petition. Surely one of the reasons people enter the medical profession is to preserve life.
