Justify the killing of these adoptable pets, you can't... murderers on death row get a reprieve, even at the last minute. Shame on you Blacktown pound!!!

It's disgusting that these dogs had homes to go to yet they were discarded like nothing! Whomever is responsible for the taking the lives of these dogs should be legally prosecuted and removed from any affiliation with animals!

I have forwarded the following email to the pound and general council.
It's interesting to note that their website clearly demonstrates that they have acted outside their own guidelines.

Dear Len,

I cannot even begin to express my deep concern that this has occurred, especially by a Govt body. Councils are bound by a duty of care for every thing within it's boundaries. This includes...

Dear Len,

I have recently become aware that the Blacktown animal pound has killed dogs prior to the advised date.

I cannot even begin to express my deep concern that this has occurred, especially by a Govt body. Councils are bound by a duty of care for every thing within it's boundaries. This includes people, flora, fauna, domestic animals, and infrastructure etc. The pounds responsibility is specifically that of domestic animals.

Animal Services

Blacktown City Council provides an Animal Holding Facility for stray, lost or unwanted animals so they can be re-united with their owners or found a new home.

The facility also provides the opportunity for unclaimed strays to be sold or re homed in order that they may again find someone to care for them.

The Animal Holding Facility is positioned under Council's Urban Animal Management Section, which administers legislation governing companion animals in order to keep our community safe, free from nuisance and to assist owners in being reunited with their lost pet.

Seized Dogs and Cats.
Council will house straying animals for 14 days, if the owner of that animal can be identified. If the owner cannot be identified, Council will house the straying animal for 7 days. If the animal is not claimed within these time periods, facility staff endeavour to sell the animal or re-home it to a welfare agency, however if unsuccessful, the animal may be euthanased.

Companion Animals held at the AHF are in two categories.

Animals that are being held for their mandatory holding period of 7 or 14 days, for these animals you will need to complete an Expression of Interest(EOI).
Animals that are being held after their mandatory holding period has expired (Due Out date). These animals, if assessed as suitable for rehoming, are available for immediate sale.
In rare cases you may express an interest in a dog that Council considers could possibly be of a restricted breed type. If this is the case you will be given a Notice of Intent to Declare the Dog as a Restricted Breed Type Dog when you purchase.

This notice will require you to have the dogs breed assessed and if necessary also its temperament assessed. These fees are not Council or Government charges but are related to fees charged by private breed and temperament assessors who are listed by the NSW Government, Division of Local Government of the Department of Premier and Cabinet.

The above is an excerpt from the council's website and clearly cites... mandatory holding periods and that it will endeavour to reunite/re home stray, lost or unwanted animals.

No where does it advise that it will kill animals in it's care , when and how you see fit , at any time , within the time frames you advertise.

What is most disturbing is the fact that the dog/s I am referring to, would have been taken in by a No Kill shelter within the specified time frames had they been kept alive.

I understand that in order for the council to re home an animal it has a duty, by way of testing, to ensure that the animal is not dangerous. These tests should be conducted by a trained professional, as the council outlines in the guidelines, and not based on a scared and distressed animals reaction to being taken and placed in a strange cage.

If a resident within your council does not abide by the rules and regulations that you set, they are served with an expiation notice.

Please advise how you can justify fining residents, when you make up the rules as you go, to suit yourself, at will, without any repercussion.

I implore you to abide by your own guidelines in the future and act as you should, in the BEST interests of both owner and companion.

Yours Faithfully

I wish I could get more friends to sign the petitions I post but so many will not do so for fear of being bombarded with petition requests. I will sign any petition that involves cruelty to animals or anything else I feel needs to be changed.
