GREAT Headline! And super document. I've sent compliments to the designer and shared with folks in my community the day this was published.

I sent this to everyone I know as well. Are we going to have a "throw down" to see who gets more responses? :-D

Thank you so much ladies! So great to hear the positive feedback, and this online community has definitely contributed to the release of this publication--specifically through our last fundraiser. Thanks again!

Lest we become too discouraged, here are three stats from the Navigator to encourage arts supporters: 93% of Americans agree that the arts are a vital part of a well-rounded education; 96% of elementary schools offer music; and at-risk kids who participate in the arts are 5x more likely to graduate from high school!

Kristen Engebretsen what is the solution ?

Pathetic...our children are not getting the exposure they require at such an impressionable age. Even if they never become "an artist" the reality is when they grow up the chances of appreciating the arts will be harder for them to enjoy and support.

Doesn't surprise me. When I was in school, my school district considered drama/theatre very important and I took classes in Junior High and High School but nothing was offered in elementary school like that!

This is absolutely disgusting. It just proves to me further that we are eliminating "CHILDHOOD"! What happened to the days where schools made you well-rounded. This actually answers my question of why there are less creative people in the world today. Before I graduated from high school I thought I wasn't creative and creativity wasn't important but now that I'm 21 I realize it is an essential component to developing cognitive abilities!

How ironic when theater and other performing and visual arts are the way students most comfortably communicate. Look at how young people idolize music and theater personalities. Doesn't that say something too?

I am not surprised. Through my nfp, Kindred Spirits, I direct Children's Jazz Choirs... mainly inner-city kids from 2nd to 6th grade, no auditions. The shocking and depressing thing I have found is that most of them don't know what a melody is! They don't know the difference between singing and talking! But when I teach them the songs from the GAS (I can teach one in 10 minutes) they love them! AND they'll never forget them! Funding is hard for a small nfp especially since '08 (even...
