I sent this to everyone I know as well. Are we going to have a "throw down" to see who gets more responses? :-D

Lest we become too discouraged, here are three stats from the Navigator to encourage arts supporters: 93% of Americans agree that the arts are a vital part of a well-rounded education; 96% of elementary schools offer music; and at-risk kids who participate in the arts are 5x more likely to graduate from high school!

Theater education is essential for building character, respect and a sense of community. There are many statistical studies that have determined that children who participate in theater education programs are less likely to be disrespectful of their classmates and and more likely to participate in other activities. Faculty members who participate in theater programs bring respect and status to the their schools and connect to a network of valued community members. Literacy and problem...

Literacy and problem solving skills are far more effectively taught through actually applying the skills - theater education does that most effectively. It's not "brain surgery" it's just good educational practice.

Only 4% of elementary schools offer a drama education program - that is the cold hard fact - and an embarrassment in a country where the media spends 65% of its time and money on the entertainment business - what's wrong with that picture?

Scores in math and science declined when classes in the arts were cut.

There is no question the arts education and success in literacy and mathematics go hand in hand -- but there is a fear factor involved here that ties the hands of principals who believe that the arts are crucial - the TEST taking mentality trumps any hope of getting the arts back into the schools - we are a society that wants instant results - the impact that quality arts education has on a school system takes a full cycle (12 years) to come to fruition - no one appears ready to wait in this...

Sheesh... I suppose that it should not surprise me, I knew it wouldn't be 82%, but somehow, I thought that it would be more than 4%. Pitiful. The Humanities are being neglected at an increasingly wider rate--much to society's loss.

Having an arts education is so crucial... it's giving youth a soulful way of expressing themselves... building confidence and self-esteem. How do we do more for our children?

Pathetic...our children are not getting the exposure they require at such an impressionable age. Even if they never become "an artist" the reality is when they grow up the chances of appreciating the arts will be harder for them to enjoy and support.

Doesn't surprise me. When I was in school, my school district considered drama/theatre very important and I took classes in Junior High and High School but nothing was offered in elementary school like that!

This is absolutely disgusting. It just proves to me further that we are eliminating "CHILDHOOD"! What happened to the days where schools made you well-rounded. This actually answers my question of why there are less creative people in the world today. Before I graduated from high school I thought I wasn't creative and creativity wasn't important but now that I'm 21 I realize it is an essential component to developing cognitive abilities!

How ironic when theater and other performing and visual arts are the way students most comfortably communicate. Look at how young people idolize music and theater personalities. Doesn't that say something too?
