Surely, there must be a local soup kitchen that would be glad to get any left over Girl Scout cookies at the end of the fundraising event each year.
if not viable to sent to troops the homeless are always hungry so hand them out at shelters or other places to lower their needs.
This girl is exhibiting all the values she is supposed to learn as a Girl Scout, but they want to kick her out? There is something very wrong with that!
I hate to say it, but this reminds me of what the boyscouts are doing to. I thought that these organizations were about morals and values. I think this is a joke, my kids will not join any troop what so ever. I will teach my kids morals and values on my own. I realize that I am just one person, but I'm going to try my best. Kudo's to Emma for trying to do something that's right
I agree Kelly. Emma worked 12 hours this weekend at booths, selling cookies. After hearing about this petition, I suddenly get a call from Girl Scouts saying Emma is being removed from her troop. It is wrong.
I'm sure the GS are not prepared to handle the situation or the publicity...or they wouldn't be tossing cookies! This is a story to support the organization getting their crumbs together and the GS being reinstated....<3
NO she should NOT be removed from her troop! THat is just plain outright WRONG.
I don't think GS cookies are food (read the ingredient list...) but I WILL sign the petition now, because that's simply just an evil way to treat this child. She is smart, she has ideas, she needs to be heard. And the troops to whom these cookies could be sent can decide yes or no on consuming them.
Kimberly Reynolds: I suggest forming national organization to fight for her rights as an American and as a Girl Scout. Sue the scum. They make me very angry. Once a Girl Scout, always a Girl Scout. They have shamed me as a Girl Scout.
Let me know. Form it, and I will join.
Kimberly Reynolds SO SO WRONG...
Kate Glenn was it your local council who called you, or GS of USA?
OMGoodnes, what a waste! We saw the video on the news, and i got mad, because they're trashing perfectly good cookies that can be sent to our troops, and given to the homeless and food pantries. Donate any cookies that are left!

MAY GOD FORBID THAT WE TRASH THEM AGAIN........THEY ARE A BIT OF HOME TO THOSE OVER THERE WHO ARE IN HARMS WAY..FIGHTING FOR US...PLEASE, SOMEONE MAKE SURE THIS YEAR THEY GO TO SOME GOOD USES AND NOT A TRASH DUMP...:( :(
It is better to toss the cookies in the trash......The Troops don't need all this sugar poison..
Send them something of real value other than junk sugar cookies......
Thanks for speaking up - you obviously grew up in a generation that cared - waste not, want not. Emma needs the support and wisdom of elders like you.
I want to see you thousands of miles from home with nothing but sand and death waiting around any and every corner, Charles. Then I want someone to consider sending you something to remind you of home, then saying, "Nah, this is the bad part of home.. cookies are evil and they don't need this." You, sir, are a dick.
@Charles Kevlin--I really don't know how to properly respond to this "Holier than thou" attitude, other than - I am really glad that Philadelphia is not in America. If it were, I would not be surprised at anything that happened.
Charles quit being an idiot, apparently you have never been in the military
YOU'RE AN IDIOT CHARLES KEVLIN....TROOPS DO NEED SUGAR, JUST CAUSE YOU ARE OLD AND FAT AND SHOULDN'T HAVE SUGAR...OUR TROOPS ARE IN GREAT SHAPE AND A FEW COOKIES WON'T HURT THEM!!!!! SO PLEASE TAKE YOUR VERY UNSMART REMARK OUT OF HERE!!!!
Charles Kevlin, have you ever spent time in war? sugar is NOT a problem, it's a comfort!
but that's not the issue here, now go eat your brussel sprouts!!!
ok so send them some where else u dont throw food away when there r starving people in it m u no 1 dollar a day will help all theese kids all over the world send cookies
The Girl Scouts are allowed to return 1% of all sales to ABC Bakery for a full refund. (It actually explains this in the news article, if anyone read it.) If the bakery is offering this return as part of business, then the bakery is the one that should be donating these cookies. Your petition should be for ABC Bakery, not for the Girl Scouts. Though I'm sure all of this ridiculousness is taking up enough of the Girl Scouts' resources that they'll be pressuring ABC Bakery themselves now. I...

I love how people stir the pot and put pressure on the wrong people before they know what's going on.
It's ok, I haven't sent the cookies yet!
Actually, the bakery give the Girl Scouts credit for the cookies. It is up to the Girl Scouts to do what they will with the cookies. Therefore, Girl Scouts need to have a policy as to this type of situation. If it were up to ABC, then the Girl Scouts, as their customer, could have them donate the cookies. Either way, the buck needs to stop with the organization who has their name on the box. Business 101.
My guess is that they had no idea what the bakery was doing with the 1% they got credit for. For all they knew, they were giving them to employees. I don't have a problem with the petition, but I do take issue with the tone. People are acting like they're kicking dogs, and laughing about it. I think all you'd have to do is ask them to donate them. My experience with the Girl Scouts is that they're reasonable people.
The bakery didn't even have the cookies. They were in the Girl Scouts warehouse. I agree, this is not infanticide, but if you knew the horrible way they treated Emma, you would not find them to be reasonable at all. Though, again, I recognize that this is just one council, not the whole organization. However, there has been a distinct lack of attention or responsibility in this matter by the organization as a whole. At some point, some one needs to advocate change. In this case, it is an 11 year old.
If people who are complaining would actually get involved with the scouts in their area and let their voices and opinions be heard maybe they can make a difference from the inside. Emma's mom can be a troop leader and decide for herself (with the troop) how many cookies they would like to purchase to donate. Volunteers, leaders, and Girl Scouts themselves make the difference in the organization. There are no rules about taking donations or tips in my council and we put tip jars out. Guess...

Guess where some of our leftovers are going...Afghanistan. Make the decision at the TROOP level and it will spread. Girls have the power to change the world.
Emma, make your own decisions as to what to do with your cookie leftovers. Be the example to the adults and show that there are people who donate but do not want the cookies and that money can be used to ship the cookies straight from your troop to another troop or to pay for the leftovers and then some so they can be donated to local organizations to be distributed. Sounds like a gold award project to me. Juliette Low would be proud to know that she inspired yet another girl to be an activist.
Remember, one pebble thrown in a pond makes many ripples. Throw your stone, start small, and the ripples of change will follow. You would be most welcome in my troop and I would DARE GS to tell my girls they could not do service projects.
Much love from one Girl Scout sister to another.
I think are misunderstanding the petition. This IS her pebble...it IS making ripples.
I think it's a very good idea, an idea I can easily support, so I came here to sign the petition assuming it was a way to express my approval of a good idea: But I could not sign a petition that 'Demands' anyone give away and pay to ship what belongs to them. Where do those who 'Demand' get the crust? I didn't sign the petition because it is outrageous.
Think I'd like to add: How bout those who 'Demand' the cookies be sent pony up the 'costs'...hmmm??
Harold Ivie Actually, Operation Gratitude will ship them at no cost. It doesn't cost the Girl Scouts anything either. Though if makes you feel better, Emma is more than happy to toss in her allowance...well, should would but she already donated her allowance to the Red Cross.
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DONATE THEM TO LOCAL FOODBANKS> THERE ARE FELLOW GIRL SCOUTS ON THE BASES OVERSEAS TRYING TO SELL COOKIES AS THEIR FUNDRAISERS!
Also of interest: she's being investigated for selling cookies ONLINE which is illegal. Notice she's says for pointing out the cookies being trashed...
Sarah you should get you facts straight before you try to slander an 11 year old. She was not selling online, she was collecting donations for the Girl Scouts I Care program. There is no investigation. They approved of her social media effort originally, then they changed their mind when her troop leader complained. they asked her to stop collecting donations online and she did.
It isn't the Girl Scouts that did this. It is the bakery that did it. They should be going after the bakery not the Girl Scouts....I agree there it too much waste, but it isn't the Girl Scout
They do not own the bakery.
They do not own the bakery but they were in possession of the cookies. Girl Scouts threw them away, not the bakery.
When I tried to join the Girl Scouts, they said they would call back by January and if we didn't get a call to call them. They never called and when we called them, they were very rude, so we decided not to join.
Start one of these clubs instead! http://www.kidscare.org/about
Thanks for the great idea!
