Personally, I wasn't that much of a fan: I was more from the folk music scene. But I think he contributed far beyond his music, and his death highlighted a certain insanity in our society that has led to events like Sandy. Intentionally, when it came to war, and unintentionally when it came to his murder, I think he deserves this.
