these silly petitions will not do anything, the Faroe Islands is a self-governing nation and they don't care what others thinks, eating dolphins is no different from eating pigs.

Magnus, my understanding is that tourism is only second to fishing on Faroe. I think the islands have a lot to offer both in natural geographic beauty as well as a cultural experience. You are right that many haven't heard of them, but that doesn't mean that the attention the islands are getting due to this issue can't be refocused to encourage, rather than dissuade tourism. You are also correct to have people consider how livestock is treated--I chose not to go there because animal...

PS... there are ecological reasons to support livestock production. A journalist worth listening to who brings up a farmer (Joe Salatin--Polyface farms) who harnesses the livestock to improve the soil, animal welfare, his community and human health. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQPN1O03z8I#t=10m47s

Ena Valikov since you are againt livestock treatment, do you chose to not go to any country that has livestock, just like you chose to not go to the Faroe Islands? i mean, if so, you would chose to not go to any country in the world, including your own

They are both intelligent, that's true. Dolphins have language and names for each other. I do nor eat pigs or any animals. That is tantamount to being a cannibal. This tradition is obsolete. If these folks need to kill to eat, then they can't possibly eat more than one at a time so it is all bullshit......I would rather they starve than to kill one dolphin or whale.

To butcher is the act of killing and dressing the animals. So it's kinda like saying 'killing them while they are still alive is sick'

Actually, it is--we stun livestock in our country to induce a loss of consciousness before they are cut up, and no such courtesy is extended to much more intelligent, social creatures who are being cut on alive, while they are communicating their stress and pain to each other. Big difference! And it would not occur to us to ingest livestock laced with mercury, PCBs and DDT.

There have been many "traditions" throughout history that we have undone as proof of our own evolution as a species growing wiser and stronger in our convictions of what is good, and right, and best for our planet. The saddest image in the slideshow is of the little girl in the pink jacket standing by watching the men in this murderous bloodbath. I hope she gives her dad hell when they get home!
