The Australian National Flag is raised every morning at the school in Villers-Bretonneux in France, in memory of the thousands of Australian casualties in liberating their village in 1917 (during the First World War).

Actually plenty of countries have changed their flags. South Africa changed theirs in 1994.

I'm happy for the british union flag to be removed from our flag. There was a time when I felt it should be left unaltered but the poms are so smug about the whole thing that I've decided they can get stuffed. So, in short, I wont be signing the petition! CHANGE THE FLAG! I like the proposed replacement!

As a US Navy sailor stationed with my Australian Brothers, I served under this beautiful flag for 2 years. It represents a brave, bold, proud, loyal, fun-loving and kind people. It stands for all the great things they have fought for and achieved. Leave it be.

Hi Tony, Pride, Yes Exactly, some will just never understand just what the Australian Flag means, one day when they are in another Country, little English Spoken and turn on the TV to see a Football or Olympics and hear that song for Australia, and watch the Flag of our Nation hoisted, they will then Understand as they will if they are True Aussies, have goosebumps.....till then we all must keep the Spirit of the Flag alive - Regards Teresa. Right-on, Tony. In Viet Nam, you fought for the people and your native land that flag proudly represents. You had mates give their lives for the same. To change it is to dishonor you, their and countless others' service. I cannot imagine the great Australian people standing for this. It's just un-Australian!

The question of a republic is irrelevant to the design of the Australian National Flag. The Flags Amendment Act 1998 places the authority to change the design of the Australian National Flag firmly in the hands of the Australian people who own and are represented by it. Our flag was democratically chosen through a public competition in 1901 and only the Australian people have the right to change it.

Although Australia was once a collection of six separate British colonies, this is no longer the case. The creation of the Australian Federation on 1 January 1901, the Statute of Westminster Act in 1942, and the proclamation of the Australia Act in 1986 make it quite clear that the British Parliament no longer has authority over our independent and sovereign nation. The Australian National Flag is unambiguously democratic in its origins as it is the product of an open public competition. The Union Jack represents the principles on which Australia's unique style of liberal democracy is based.

The Australian National Flag stands for freedom of speech, parliamentary democracy, rule of law, egalitarianism and the courage and sacrifice of the ANZACS. It also represents our geographic position in the southern hemisphere with the Southern Cross while the Commonwealth Star represents Australia's federation of States and Territories.

The Australian National Flag is a positive reflection of the values and ideals that have been the bedrock of a society and a system of Government that are among the most envied in the world.
