The Diggers did not fight under the Australian Flag. But it is likely that some soldiers did take Australian flags with them during battle. Officially it is not the flag of conflict before WW2 but unofficially it's likely many proud Australian soldiers used it as a symbol of their plight to keep Australia free.

Political correctness goes too far and only seems to want to apease most who are not orriginally from your country. Well if they don't like your flag or your holiday, then they can fuck off back to whatever third world shithole they came from. We had very similar problems here in Canada, The Union Jack was once the symbol of Canada, but during the Great War si many of our soldiers began etching the maple leaf in caves and on walls just before combat that it very quickly caught on as a symbol of our country. Although it was not fully recognised on a national flag until the mid 60's. But up until that time you will find the maple leaf in one form or another either stitched, or cst in military emblems for our soldier's uniforms as they went into battle, so unofficially as a whole the entire country recognised the maple leaf as a symbol of pride and national unity and identity, long before the government did. We also fought under the British flag since the Boer War in 1898 and were proud to do it and be part of the Commonwealth. We love our flag now as it exists today mainly because it is uniquely Canadian. If you ask a Canadian born here, they will tell you that they love the Australian Flag. I certainly do, and make goddamn sure it stays that way out of respect for your fighting men, your children and your very way of life. You should never tamper with something that works. Our two great countries have a lot in common. Far too many people who are not originally from here that want to upset the very balance of things as they exist. Well do not listen to them. Your flag, your national holiday and your people are wonderful. I love Australia.........keep it Australian for all those who deeply love and respect the land, god bless all of you.......and you know who you are,.....the ones who would willingly fight to preserve your way of life. As you wonderful people say........"No Worries!"

well in actual fact they didn't!

While the flag came into effect in 1901 after a public competition, it was known as the Australian Ensign..... it was NOT the official flag of Australia until the Flag Act (1953), which was signed and ratified by Lizzie on her 1954 trip to Australia.....

SO.... the "flag", too which Aussies refer too, representing Australia in WWI and WWII was actually called the Australian Ensign.... NOT the Australian Flag.

And here are definitions of flag/ensign:

National "Australian" Flag - an emblem flown as a symbol of nationality.

"Australian" Ensign Flag - emblem usually consisting of a rectangular piece of cloth of distinctive design... an emblem - a visible symbol representing an abstract idea.

Cut and paste from The Australian Monarchist League website:

What flag was flown during the First and Second World Wars?

''On the battlefronts, Australian servicemen would as often see the Union Jack and the flags of the Allies as they would the Australian blue ensign.'

In both World Wars, the RAAF fought under the British Royal Air Force Flag. In World War II, the RAN fought under the British Navy Ensign with the Australian blue ensign at the bow as an additional flag. The Australian Army fought under Australian red and blue ensigns and the Union Jack.

I am not suggesting for a moment with this post that I support a change of flag.... I DO NOT..... but I do want the arguments used to support the Flag.... to be accurate :)

EGOTIST!..... sorry to inform you my comment was to the world at large..... and while you may have taken my comments personally...... my response to that is.... it ISNT ALL ABOUT YOU MY DEAR!!!!!

NOW........to respond to your egotistical rant!

Firstly.... I do not hide, I am on FB.... and open to messages from all....

Secondly.... the talk is to change the flag is regarding the SPORTING (Boxing Kangaroo) flag not the Australian flag....

Thirdly.... I am NOT disrespecting our Anzacs or Diggers in the least... I am correcting misinformation being put out by "so called experts" over the flag (or more correctly ENSIGN) the Anzacs and Diggers fought under in both WWI and WWII.

Fourthly... you only have to read the thread here.... as well as those sharing the petition on FB who are commenting over and over about the flag and how our Anzacs and Diggers fought under it in WWI and WWII......

I want discussion to reflect reality.... Anzacs and diggers were NOT represented by an Australian Flag at all during both of those conflicts...... and the picture you use to support your argument shows Australian Soldiers carrying the AUSTRALIAN ENSIGN.... and if you don't understand the difference, even after I defined it for you..... then.... you are showing a closed mind to truth and if you or any other person think I am being disrespectful to our military heros..... because I dare to CORRECT misinformation.... then personally.... that is your issue to deal with.... as I am a proud Aussie, PROUD of our ANZACS and our DIGGERS and what they have achieved, and thankful to them for their sacrifices to allow this great land to move forward.....

and again I paste for you the definition from my previous post taken from

http://www.monarchist.org.au/australian-flag.html

NOW... I challenge you so point out the words AUSTRALIAN FLAG..... in any of that paragraph!!!!!

The Flags Act 1953
With the passage of the Flags Act 1953, the Commonwealth blue ensign became the Australian National Flag.

There is truth, and then there is...... an individual's truth.... which isnt always... THE TRUTH!

This flag signifys for all of us Australians who love our country, we are prepared to stand up and be counted as true Aussies. Lena Allen - here, here! I agree Australia Day too, stop changing things for others who come to our country and do not embrace it! We don't go to theirs and want to change their flags, their laws and their customs. Leave us alone, don't like it then go back to where you all came from!

The Australian National Flag is raised every morning at the school in Villers-Bretonneux in France, in memory of the thousands of Australian casualties in liberating their village in 1917 (during the First World War).

Steve Adams Well this is what it is all about, this is how changes are made,OR given the chance to stand up and fight for what you believe in and I believe in this Country and our Flag, not a new flag to boost someones ego. I love our flag just the way it is.

And it just goes to show how little respect is left for the people who died under that flag and it is a disgrace that Australians need to be reminded of that fact by French school children who honour that flag daily.
