I' m sorry I didn't see this earlier or I would have signed Pauline's petition. I truly hope that she gets her new passport. It is a travesty to treat her this way.

People with disabilities should not be refused access on any form of transport public or otherwise, as they are human beings that have the same rights to be treated with courtesy, dignity and respect as you or I. Just because someone many looks different to you or anyone else does not give anybody the right to discriminate, and bearing in mind they are a paying customer too, are entitled to a high standard of service, and a safe journey without incident. Just because someone many looks different to you or anyone else does not give anybody the right to discriminate, and bearing in mind they are a paying customer too, are entitled to a high standard of service, and a safe journey without incident. I have met a number of people over the years with Downs Syndrome, and I would never treat them with nothing less than 100%, courtesy, dignity, respect, and good manners!, as I would like to be treated myself.

I have a sister and a son with Down syndrome, both travel internationally between Africa, Europe and the USA freely, without discrimination and are most often the best behaved, most enjoyable passengers on the flight. If my Sister and Son could not travel, my family would be divided too, family holidays, reunions, weddings, and events would be entirely incomplete. They are essential members of our family and have to be with us just as my parents and my brother and my uncles and cousins do....

They are essential members of our family and have to be with us just as my parents and my brother and my uncles and cousins do. No-one external to the family has the right to decide they cannot travel or be with their family, that is abusive. If the family takes responsibility for their expenses and care along the way...who in the world is to complain or restrain. My son is extremely independent as are many people with down syndrome. Travel and family time enables and enriches everyone's lives, we should promote it.

It still blows my mind how the world is these days. Its 2013 for crying out loud. We are all Gods children and discrimination between us is uncalled for. I wish the world could grow up and stop acting like a group of mis-behaved 5 year olds

This is terrible, one of the sad things is I can't say I'm surprised to see this happen. I think its disgusting that there are people in positions who abuse their power because they have disgusting views. I hope you get to your family very soon and those responsible for this are made accountable for their actions.

on what grounds are they refusing the passport. get the grounds they are refusing the passport in writing. was she institutionalized in the past at any stage if so in order to secure funding for the institutionalization from the government the guards her parents her local gp a cousin or the "place" she was staying could have had her declared a ward of the court. this is a relatively simple matter for any solicitor. it is often done in the event someone gets ill and becomes "a danger to him/herself. as far as i know it takes the signature of a gp and a shrink or something like that. once this is done what it basically means she has no rights as an adult and she is in the care or at least supposed to be in the care of the state. she could no more go oversees then a five year old child could. off hand this is the only thing i can think of check this out http://www.courts.ie/Courts.ie/library3.nsf/%28WebFiles%29/E6C1CF1ED06088A1802579050051CD90/$FILE/Wards%20of%20court%20booklet.pdf. that being said it is possible that in the event she has been made a ward of the court that it can be revoked i would be looking at the parents solicitor because it sounds like he or she may have done this to protect the family home from "wayword" people. not to cast aspersions but sometimes relatives have this done as a way of getting their hands on property or assets if someone has power of attorney declared over someone else they become the legal guardian they have the final say as to who get what and when furtherance to this is the fact that it could also be a specific person ie a soliciter a judge a relative, look the bottom line is that this sort of bs goes on all the time especially where there is money involved a half decent solicitor should be able to help if funds are that low then there is free legal advice under flac the free legal advice centre usually it is a free solicitor meeting once a month. in a pinch you might talk to the clerk of the court as sometimes they can point you in the right direction. i hope this helps somewhat its scary to think that the power of the state can be brought to bear against a citizen. it makes you appreciate the constitution all the more. please hit the reply button below this and let me know how it turns out ps one final thing go to the local citezen information office or try their website
