Lovely comment Ellen... thank you and I agree... little bureaucrats don't have nearly the power they like to think they have.... just as well too as they can't be trusted to do the right thing as they have displayed... not only in this case... but time and time again!

People with disabilities should not be refused access on any form of transport public or otherwise, as they are human beings that have the same rights to be treated with courtesy, dignity and respect as you or I. Just because someone many looks different to you or anyone else does not give anybody the right to discriminate, and bearing in mind they are a paying customer too, are entitled to a high standard of service, and a safe journey without incident. I have met a number of people over the years with Downs Syndrome, and I would never treat them with nothing less than 100%, courtesy, dignity, respect, and good manners!, as I would like to be treated myself.

I have a sister and a son with Down syndrome, both travel internationally between Africa, Europe and the USA freely, without discrimination and are most often the best behaved, most enjoyable passengers on the flight. If my Sister and Son could not travel, my family would be divided too, family holidays, reunions, weddings, and events would be entirely incomplete. They are essential members of our family and have to be with us just as my parents and my brother and my uncles and cousins do....

No-one external to the family has the right to decide they cannot travel or be with their family, that is abusive. If the family takes responsibility for their expenses and care along the way...who in the world is to complain or restrain. My son is extremely independent as are many people with down syndrome. Travel and family time enables and enriches everyone's lives, we should promote it.

It still blows my mind how the world is these days. Its 2013 for crying out loud. We are all Gods children and discrimination between us is uncalled for. I wish the world could grow up and stop acting like a group of mis-behaved 5 year olds

If, this is true, she needs to get it out in the news in Ireland. She needs to seek a lawyer who deals with discrimination and also the disabilities commission. She can ask for one who will do it pro bono. Get in on the news in Ireland.

Wow the mind boggles! Why do those in power find it so hard to admit they've made a mistake. As I'm sure it is. If its not a mistake then it's completely inhuman discrimination against a disabled woman who has the same rights (including to travel) as anybody else. The people who have caused all this mess and distress should take a long hard look in the mirror....

Hi Daniel... it seems to me also that the problem now is one of just an inability to admit they made a mistake. When the mistake was pointed out to them over a year ago, it was a simple matter to have corrected it and that would have been the end of it. But they didn't or wouldn't correct it and instead tried to cover it up and at every step went on to make the situation worse and worse until it came to this point. Anyone can make a mistake.. and that's okay... but the repeated failure to...

It's sad it's affected Pauline so much when they simply needed to apologise to her and correct the mistake swiftly. Isn't that what kids are taught?

This is awful but petitions don't solve anything usually.
I don't know why your first call would be to a solicitor, not a petition?
I'm disabled myself and if this happened to me, I'd get the law involved.

I suppose there are people who are never told they are equal. So many people thinking they have superiority over others means the people who are often in need of help are the ones who are told they don't deserve it.

The petition was not the first step. This was the last resort as all other options have been exhausted over the past year back and forth with various government bodies, solicitors etc all not willing to admit that a HUGE mistake has been made by the passport office.

Update: Pauline's Facebook page has been disabled (someone against her must have reported it). She can only get it back up with a copy of a government issued ID like a passport. She has been denied her passport. What kind of cruel, evil people would try to stand in the way of her getting what she wants? Only the most vile, rotten to the core kind of person would do such a thing. This petition however proves there is a much larger group of good hearted people on her side.

Hi Kirsten. Please can you say why this story has not made the Newspapers TV Radio news etc here in ireland. I have sent email to passport office but I cannot understand why you and your family have not made this story more puplic.

Hi Mary.. the newspapers are going to carry this story but it takes time because they have to have their legal departments check through all the correspondence to make sure they are reporting accurately.. and I agree it is important to make sure the issues are truthfully reported so that something like this can never happen in Ireland or anywhere else again. Thanks so much for your support!

Shame on the Passport Office. Pauline is a human being, who has feelings like anyone else. Has recently lost her Mum who loved and cared for her, all her life. Has family who want her to have a loving family life with them in Florida. Shame on you Jobsworths! Give Ms Pauline Conboy her passport back, and let her be happy.

Successive governments have refused to recognise the Social Model of disability which judges the environment and society as the factor which disables people.

Instead they have stuck to the outdated 'medical' model which highlights an individual's disability, making them more vulnerable to victimisation.

Socialists demand an end to job cuts, the decimation of public services and the scapegoating of minority groups such as the disabled.
