I am another animal rights advocate with a PASSION for WOLVES. WOLVES is one of the many CAUSES I work on. WE must FRIEND each other, NETWORK together in all WOLF GROUPS! WE must UNITE in the FIGHT to SAVE and PROTECT all WOLF SPECIES WORLD WIDE! This has to be a GLOBAL effort on all levels to save these majestic animals on our planet. Because there are HUNTERS, TRAPPERS, and RANCHERS every where that want to their their land from them and just have pure HATRED for them! MAN is the TOP...

Because there are HUNTERS, TRAPPERS, and RANCHERS every where that want to their their land from them and just have pure HATRED for them! MAN is the TOP PREDATOR in the forest now, WE must out smart him in so many ways, first by EDUCATING the youngest children in preschool on up about WOLVES and their ENVIRONMENT. Next, we must teach the RANCHERS that they DO have other OPTIONS to SAVE and PROTECT their LIVESTOCK such as GUARD DOGS, DONKEYS and LLAMAS. WE CAN DO THIS! WE NEED TO PUT WOLVES BACK ONTO THE ENDANGERED SPECIES LISTS IN EVERY COUNTRY!

The reindeer isn't novelty meat in Finland, in fact it's eaten quite a lot. On top of that, the Sámi haven't got much land for their reindeer herding as it is because of losing land to urbanisation by the Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian peoples, just as they have been for the last thousand years. I think you should make your argument less one sided, and consider the fact that the Sámi have a livelihood and a whole culture to uphold, rather than belittling them as only being their to 'put...

I think you should make your argument less one sided, and consider the fact that the Sámi have a livelihood and a whole culture to uphold, rather than belittling them as only being their to 'put novelty meat onto your plate'. Think native Americans on their reserves, and you've got a close analogy. Also, reindeer migrate, so fences would only have limited use. The issue's more complicated than you're making out. I'm not sure whether I can sign this petition or not: I'd suggest rather than boycotting reindeer products, other methods of control could be used, such as stunning wolves and transporting them away.

Stunning does not help unfortunately. If transported away to other areas, even far away, they tend to return to what they consider their home territory. We have several examples of it in Sweden. This is not an easy question with easy solutions and therefore people who often have very little or no experience or knowledge in the subject should not sign a petition that calls for boycott of a peoples livelihood. There must be other ways of trying to improve the situation for the wolves...

me n a bunch of friends were planning a trip to finland this year... well now that ive saw n read this the trip is off... they just lost at least 50,000 american dollars due to this... n who knows how much money in the future.... now its my goal to deter as many people as possible from going there... these poor wolves do not deserve this... man should love all animals....

oh, bullshit. if this was enough to deter your friends from going to finland, then they better not plan on going to virtually every other country in the world.

i believe there are some nice uninhabited islands in the outer hebrides.

have fun.

For goodness sake! just how many reindeer can 160 wolves kill? and just how often do they attempt to take large prey?

Helinä Sirpa Tughan

All those 160 are not in Lapland; there are Wolves also in the South. And they can also kill dogs if the dogs are chasing reindeers!

Helinä Sirpa Tughan if the dogs are chasing reindeer, i fully understand if the dog gets shot. it isn't on the herder, either, it's on the dog's owner for not controlling the dog, not training the dog properly, and for allowing it to run at large. it's the same thing over here - were i a sheep farmer or a cattle rancher and some dog is menacing the stock i rely on to keep food on my table, i'm sorry, but dog's gotta go. mind you, i'd try other methods first but then, i like dogs and i'm a...

But you don't mind that our small brothers and sister the reindeer are killed by wolves and you protest that the Sami reindeer holders protect them? You lack logic!

Csh Threenorns

no, sorry - I agree that the finnish wolf should not be hunted - but there IS no wolf hunt this year. destroying the livelihood of an entire culture is not the answer, either.

Susanne Maria Dörfler

This goes for Norway and Sweden as well... just horrible. And the Sami seriously insist they live with mother nature... have never seen natural helicopters or reindeer naturally so overpopulated that thousands of them starve to death each year... BLEAH!

People, please! You don't know the origin of the pictures - are they even from Lapland? And what about the reindeerkeepers, the only indigenious people in the EU? Should they just stop protecting their reindeers because of some cute wolves? Wolves are predators and there's enough of them in Russia. Seriously. Many reindeerkeepers have already stopped their traditional living, which has gone on for centuries, because of wolves from Russia that kill all their reindeers. This isn't a black and...

Many reindeerkeepers have already stopped their traditional living, which has gone on for centuries, because of wolves from Russia that kill all their reindeers. This isn't a black and white questions, so don't make the people in Lapland to some sort of demons. That's childish. And please do buy reindeer meat - it's the most ecological meat in the whole world. Read before you come here and leave your comments.
