This is a very stupid petition and founded on deep ignorance! Try to change the availability to giving killing wolf licenses would be better. And the suggestion to build barriers for the reindeers are so way out from reality it could come. Reindeers are going free and their areas of movement are enourmous! There are plenty of them and they are not threatened in any way. Reindeer meat, furs, horns and handicrafts items made from the latter are a very important source of income, for some the only, for the Sami ancestors of the aboriginals in the Scandinavian countries Norway, Sweden, and Denmark and also in Russia. This is a good but discouraging example of when people without insight, experience of nature or even theoretical knowledge start a world wide petition. Unfortunately there's a lot of people out there who will fall for this because of lack of knowledge or being to lazy to check up facts before they sign... :-(

So there are plenty of wolves? How many? We need facts, not anecdotal opinions. Last I heard, there has yet to be an "official" wolf count. We all know there are indeed plenty of reindeer and plenty of humans - but plenty of wolves - show us some numbers.

Hey, Karen. As of now, there are 0-5 wolves in whole Lapland, and those 5 are from russian flocks, not any flocks in Finlands side. They are killed as soon as sighted. And mostly poached.

Anders, looks like you are not so well informed. As of yesterday, according to the news, norwegian reindeer are dying of hunger and coming over to Finland to graze, and too bad, but we have same problem here, too many reindeer, no food because of overgrazing and size of the herds and no natural enemies (predators) to cull the herds and keep them healthy and herds in manageable size. And actually they are thinking of building new fences along the borders to keep the reindeer separated....

Reindeer herding area in Finland is 36 % of the country, and they kill every wolf, wolverine, lynx and bear there because the feed on reindeer, they think that its better for the animal to die of hunger. So that is the so called free roaming, the animals are weak and sick, need hay that is brought from southern finland, tons of it..that meats environmental footprint is horrible. Not to speak about the threat it forms for other animals, like predators.

Because there are HUNTERS, TRAPPERS, and RANCHERS every where that want to their their land from them and just have pure HATRED for them! MAN is the TOP PREDATOR in the forest now, WE must out smart him in so many ways, first by EDUCATING the youngest children in preschool on up about WOLVES and their ENVIRONMENT. Next, we must teach the RANCHERS that they DO have other OPTIONS to SAVE and PROTECT their LIVESTOCK such as GUARD DOGS, DONKEYS and LLAMAS. WE CAN DO THIS! WE NEED TO PUT WOLVES BACK ONTO THE ENDANGERED SPECIES LISTS IN EVERY COUNTRY!

THE BALANCE OF NATURE IS THEIRS TO LIVE IN NOT FOR US KILLING THEM!

Although I feel for the reindeer herders, losing their animals must be difficult, they must realise that they need to live in harmony with the natural world and predation by wolves however much they dislike this is a part of that. A balance needs to be struck by the Finnish government to prevent damage to the environment by excessive numbers of reindeer and to ensure the survival of wolves which play a very vital part in the ecosystem of this region.

Andy is right. Humans are a disgusting and ignorant species. No respect for other animals. All we do is use and abuse. I hope we pay the price sooner than later because most of us deserve extinction. The arrogance to think we can do whatever the hell we want to other animals.

Believe it or not, those torturers who let their reindeer starve to death by thousands each year and drive many other animals into extinction, actually call themselves related to Native Americans and 'true children of mother nature'... and the world is dumb enough to believe them....

The reindeer isn't novelty meat in Finland, in fact it's eaten quite a lot. On top of that, the Sámi haven't got much land for their reindeer herding as it is because of losing land to urbanisation by the Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian peoples, just as they have been for the last thousand years. I think you should make your argument less one sided, and consider the fact that the Sámi have a livelihood and a whole culture to uphold, rather than belittling them as only being their to 'put...

Think native Americans on their reserves, and you've got a close analogy. Also, reindeer migrate, so fences would only have limited use. The issue's more complicated than you're making out. I'm not sure whether I can sign this petition or not: I'd suggest rather than boycotting reindeer products, other methods of control could be used, such as stunning wolves and transporting them away.

Stunning does not help unfortunately. If transported away to other areas, even far away, they tend to return to what they consider their home territory. We have several examples of it in Sweden. This is not an easy question with easy solutions and therefore people who often have very little or no experience or knowledge in the subject should not sign a petition that calls for boycott of a peoples livelihood. There must be other ways of trying to improve the situation for the wolves...
