Hi! Thank you for the feedback. My petition is dedicated only to the creation of an amendment which would grant American citizens claiming residency in P.R. the right to vote for President of the United States. My family in Puerto Rico has raised me to respect their belief that I shouldn't speak out about statehood because I don't live there and it is a self-determination issue. BUT, they are very happy with what I'm doing here! Thanks for your support. I'd be grateful if you'd please share my petition. NEWYORICANGIRL.COM

Julia Torres I think this is a self determination issue. However, there are Puerto Ricans in the US. basically stuck in limbo who take a strong stance for or against based upon our experiences. Some just choose to keep quiet because of unwanted attention and discrimination either way (from their own fellow PRs or USA locals). This is my opinion. Your mother is a wise woman. I do choose to say that I do not think PR should be a state at this time but this is based upon my own...

Thus I agree that it is something that should be left to a vote for all Puerto Ricans born in PR or PR residents of PR.

Carolyn if Puerto Rico becomes a State read the real story behind Hawaii. Hawaii became a State by Military Invasion. I never ever want to see Puerto Rico as a State. It will lose all it's culture. Hawaii is an ILLEGAL State brought in my Military Brute Force.

The 23rd Amendment was added to the U.S. Constitution to accommodate the residents of the District of Columbia so they could vote for President of the United States. They are not a state. So, why shouldn't we be asking the U.S. Congress to debate a 28th Amendment allowing EVERY American citizen - regardless of where they live - from voting?

Edward Michael Harney

When Puerto Rico becomes a State or a Commonwealth then the citizens will be eligible to vote.

Julia Torres

  • Edward Michael Harney

D.C. is neither and yet their citizens vote for President. Check the 23rd Amendment and then explain to us why American citizens living in Puerto Rico should be disenfranchised. Bare in mind, that's ANY American citizen choosing to claim residency in Puerto Rico - Puerto Rican or not. And, what about their residents who've served in the U.S. Military? They too should be banned from voting for their own Commander in Chief?

I said a lot of ignorance about P. R. I was in a situation with a young girl, I said a lot of hurt feelings (abortion) and took it out on people , that had nothing to do with it. Again I ask GOD for forgiveness , I ask you to do the same,!

John Dodds
John Dodds

It seems to me that Puerto Ricans do not vote in any U.S. election! Right, now Julia Torres wants that P.R.s be allowed to vote for a U.S. President. Surely Puerto ricans should be involved in State voting first before going for the "Big One!" If this means becoming a U.S.State then ask the Peurto Ricans if they want it! This is from a British point of view without an Axe to grind!

Julia Torres
Julia Torres
  • Mike Wadas

Yes. Especially since there are 50% of Americans living on the mainland who don't pay taxes (loopholes, poverty) who still get to vote for President. Residents of Puerto Rico already do pay taxes but, even if they didn't, my point is that ALL Americans should have equal voting rights...

Mike Wadas
Mike Wadas
  • Mike Wadas

...and equal protection under the U.S. Constitution....at least we can't blame Puerto Rico for the present situation we are in. Even with the wealth of information we can get from the internet i.e. voting records, candid caught on tape/Youtube uploads...we are still voting blind. We need to focus on our economy, and foreign policy, and stop covering them up with social issues.

Ri DeCarlo

  • Mike Wadas

Correct Mike Wadas, they are already paying every other tax, so just add the Federal tax and bring this commonwealth into State recognition, and problem solved. Not sure how Washington, D.C. isn't a state, yet they are allowed to vote? All very confusing, eh? lol..

Julia Torres
Julia Torres
  • Mike Wadas

Exactly! Why was the 23rd Amendment added to the U.S. Constitution for the benefit of D.C. residents being granted full voting rights but they won't do the same thing for Puerto Rico? That's EXACTLY what my petition is asking the U.S. Congress to consider...

I will be removing my signature. I firmly believe only American citizens should have the right to vote in Presidential elections. I, like the previous comment, thought this was for Statehood. There are more pressing issues that could use a Consitiutional amendment to solve.

Puerto Ricans ARE AMERICAN CITIZENS! That's the problem!! Sory, althought in the United States I vote republican and am a defender of patriotic American [ anglo] values.. my thoughts change when it comes to Puerto Rico, a colony since 1493, first with Spain, where we get our language, culture. [ part of ,, we are our own peole, unique ] religion, and what makes us who we are in this world! so voting fpr the American president is not a paramount for me, what is important for me is the descolonization of puerto rico, under the United States flag since 1898, we are an Hispanic people , of the new world, a mix to this side of the world, of native [ taino Indian] European and African roots... so we are Unique , The United states must stand up and resolcve our status quo,, it is in the documebt of The Treaty Of Paris 1898, that congress of the United States is the sole decicion maker of puerto ricos political and civil status.. so while I rrespect the laws and views of the United States government [ now with this adminstration Iam uneasy] Iam for the descolonization of puerto rico.. we have the right to be free, an ally to the United States, but on different ground.. not under colonization.. or under statehood.. I believe communist China is moving forward on expansion,, I do not want puerto rico to fall under chinese hands.. It happened in 1898, when Spain lost the war and ceded most of the territories[ provinces] , if we do not take care of puerto ricos civil, political status , puerto rico will be doomed when China rises... it is there.. we can not deny this.. I welcome this in this era, I want puerto rico as an all to the united States.. before the dragon enters.. So I can not sign this pledge,,, Important to me is the descolonization, then we can deal with other issues... We are in a very volatile world, right now north Korea is threatening the United States,, Obama isa in silence,, Listen Puerto rico can be traded, ceded under our present political situation,, this can not wait.. Where is our dignity? The United States fought for thir independence from the British, this I respect.. Freedom is what makes peole great...
