It makes no sense Puerto Rican/ American citizens can fight and die for our country but are denied the right to vote? Where's the justice there?
We are not denied to vote on the mainland. Currently we don't pay Federal Taxes in Puerto Rico but received Federal Aid and Tuition aid. We have also been asked to vote for statehood and deny each time. The blame is on us...we either vote for state hood or independence not this hybrid.
It is a falacy that we do not pay federal taxes in Puerto Rico. I am retired military and VA employee and pay federal taxes. Not everyone pays, but because of that, we do not receive equal federal funding as the states do.
You live in one of the states, of course you're going to pay federal taxes, so do I in PA. But if you move to PR you'll only pay sales tax and state tax. I love my island but the life situation is unbearable!
Fuck. Them, they get welfare, methadone, they can't even speak. English, no education,in
It doesn't take much education to be prejudice against others, or to cuss others out, and the way you write, you don't seem to know much about the English language yourself.
You can't dress yourself' I am older I've been every where, 1st the U.S asked PR to become a state, they said. No thanks you fixed PR we want to be by our selfs !
I LOVE they become a state, but PR wants to be by themselves!
Good night and have a better tomorrow! FRANK n
Denise Puerto Rico does not have welfare that's subsidized by the federal government. We speak English and have been part of this country since before you family probably got here (1898). We have fought in every war since and lost the most men to Vietnam when compared to other states. With regard to being older I am not that young either Denise hand have traveled all over the US and the world. For your information half of the country voted yes this time. The US is not prepared to take such a huge undertaking at the moment and are trying to figure it out. You really need to educate yourself.
Thank You Susanna, I am not trying to be rude to Denise but none of us have a right to put down a whole culture of people and its close to my heart because I grew up with a lot of Puerto Ricans and As a whole they are beautiful, hardworking people that make you feel like family no matter what race you are. I love all people unless they give me reasons not to. There is plenty of people that are uneducated, lazy, on welfare, on methadone doing drugs around their kids, Cooking Meth in their houses with their kids in their houses breathing in the poison and most of them around this part of the country are white. I'm originally from NY so I have been around all people and there is good and bad in all. People that are ignorant like her really get under my skin.

Denise G......Spanish is the language in PR although the majority of the people speak English it's not mandatory. Whatever help they get from the government they deserve it. After all, they shed their blood, limbs and loose their lives for your freedom and mine. Deal with it.
I will be removing my signature. I firmly believe only American citizens should have the right to vote in Presidential elections. I, like the previous comment, thought this was for Statehood. There are more pressing issues that could use a Consitiutional amendment to solve.
Mark we are American citizens since 1898. If we move to another state we can vote for the President that's why we can also be drafted. It's the statehood issue that needs to be resolved.
Become a state, pay taxes to the US and I would heave no issue.
Puerto Ricans ARE AMERICAN CITIZENS! That's the problem!! Just like the 23rd Amendment that was created for the District of Columbia (which is also NOT a state!), I am advocating for the belief that ALL LEGAL American citizens should be granted the right to vote for their Commander in Chief no matter where they live. Thank you for your consideration.
And, Puerto Ricans DO PAY TAXES! :)
Susana Rodriguez Since 1917 we're american citizen.
Mark Penrose, the people of Puerto Rico are US CITIZENS since 1898!
Julia Torres, Puerto Rico no paga taxes FEDERALES!
Si PR se convirtiera en estado entonces tendriamos que pagar taxes federales, estatales (ya lo hacemos) y locales (por vivir o trabar en cierto municipio, NO es lo mismo que los taxes por ventas)
...are you willing to start paying federal income tax in exchange for the right to vote?
Yes. Especially since there are 50% of Americans living on the mainland who don't pay taxes (loopholes, poverty) who still get to vote for President. Residents of Puerto Rico already do pay taxes but, even if they didn't, my point is that ALL Americans should have equal voting rights...
...and equal protection under the U.S. Constitution....at least we can't blame Puerto Rico for the present situation we are in. Even with the wealth of information we can get from the internet i.e. voting records, candid caught on tape/Youtube uploads...we are still voting blind. We need to focus on our economy, and foreign policy, and stop covering them up with social issues.
Correct Mike Wadas, they are already paying every other tax, so just add the Federal tax and bring this commonwealth into State recognition, and problem solved. Not sure how Washington, D.C. isn't a state, yet they are allowed to vote? All very confusing, eh? lol..
Exactly! Why was the 23rd Amendment added to the U.S. Constitution for the benefit of D.C. residents being granted full voting rights but they won't do the same thing for Puerto Rico? That's EXACTLY what my petition is asking the U.S. Congress to consider...
Many of you are making very ignorant comments because you have no clue what your talking about. Your just full of ignorance. Puerto Rico should be able to vote for President. Google what the US government did to the people of Viques.
SALVEMOS A PUERTO RICO AHORA
SAVE PUERTO RICO NOW
I have never found a reason why Puerto Rico should not earn Statehood. You shouldn't just be able to vote for the president, you should be represented in congress, and given a star on our flag.
Or the US should grant them independence, either way the current situation is not freedom for Puerto Ricans.
Vote or no vote we'll always be screwed by congress. We've been screwed since 1898 by the U.S.A and before that by Spain.
I can relate to your frustration. The U.S. Navy seized my family's ancestral land and I'm not over it. Keep hope alive.
When Puerto Rico becomes a State or a Commonwealth then the citizens will be eligible to vote.
D.C. is neither and yet their citizens vote for President. Check the 23rd Amendment and then explain to us why American citizens living in Puerto Rico should be disenfranchised. Bare in mind, that's ANY American citizen choosing to claim residency in Puerto Rico - Puerto Rican or not. And, what about their residents who've served in the U.S. Military? They too should be banned from voting for their own Commander in Chief?
Listen,I wrote about PR, I am Denise Husband I was in Vietnam
I said a lot of ignorance about P. R. I was in a situation with a young girl, I said a lot of hurt feelings (abortion) and took it out on people , that had nothing to do with it. Again I ask GOD for forgiveness , I ask you to do the same,!
