Very sad. Add Switzerland to the barbaric list of Countries that do not respect life, which shocks me. Aminal cruelty is across the world, but eating dogs and cats that feel safe with humans must fear them. This all makes me sick.

I live in Switzerland and my heart aches for what those people are doing to these animals. I do hope this soon will be forbidden by law. Most of Swiss people are not aware that this is happening, propably because it is a smaller, hilly part of Switzerland which is a bit "secluded" where this happens. Shame on those so called "humans" doing this to defenseless animals.

Having read some comments here I have to say that I don't understand why a whole country is measured for cruel acts that are done by a few people, mostly elderly people/farmer who kept up a tradition which have ended in many other countries and as well in Switzerland more than 100 years ago. Most Swiss people even haven't been aware that this is still happening and it was a huge shock to read this all in the papers. Why this cause is entirely remote from reality:
- Dog and cat meat has been many, many decades in Europe UDN consumed in Switzerland, especially in the country when it was famine and the peasants were very poor yet.
- That it is not explicitly prohibited is because no one would eat a dog or cat. This requires from us no laws.

Switzerland has the toughest animal protection law in the world of the other countries, especially the United States can only dream of. Unfortunately, we were ridiculed by the surrounding countries for this very strong law. The law includes, among others, the following points:
- Pet Protection - festgeschreiben Welfare in the Animal Protection Ordinance for each animal.

Farm animals:
- A proper care for all animals is prescribing
- Slatted floors in barns are prohibited
- Cages of chickens has been banned many years ago
- The import of egg powder and poultry products from countries with cages is not yet prohibited. unfortunally!
This is the cheap meat in our stores. Maybe we should boycott those countrys because of this kind of meat production ?

@ Monica, this is not aimed at the good people of Switzerland who do what they can for their pets. It is aimed at your Government who need to make it illegal to eat a pet. People like you who support this should also sign the petition.

I just don't get how so many countries have so little respect values empathy Etc. for animal! I still feel that eating a dog, cat, horse which is suppose to be a loving pet which is not lunch or dinner is Beyond my understanding & this practice of eating pets needs to stop! I know every culture is different & all follow different practices but I hope if they want to choice to eat meat they eat something other then a pet? Eat more bugs they are every where & are also probably even free & full of protein & will save more cats & dogs lives!

What is your position on eating non-pets like cows, pigs, and chickens?

Ashley Power
Ashley Power
  • Wendi Cohen

Mark, you answered your own question. She's talking about pets, not cows, pigs, and chickens. (yes, I know some people have farm animals for pets) But we're talking about pets like dogs and cats. For centuries it's been normal to eat farm animals, it hasn't been normal to eat HOUSE PETS. I understand there's cultural differences, but obviously most of us living in North America are going to think it's down right inhumane to eat house pets. We love our pets as part of the family, not part of dinner.

who's to say that a pig, cow, chicken can't be a pet?? I am a vegetarian and don't eat meat of any kind. To say that one animal can be a pet and another can not is absurd!!

Giselle Kuchirka

Why is a cow or a pig dinner, but a dog or horse not? Think for yourself. You have been told what goes on your plate, and what is ok to love. There is no difference. The only difference is your attitude towards certain animals.
It's called Speciesism.
One animal is not worth more than another.

Ashley Power Just because it's "normal" doesnt make it right. People have been eating cats and dogs for centuries. It is "normal" to them. If you eat flesh, you have no right to look down upon others who also eat flesh. It's all the same. WAKE UP.

This pledge is not directed against the Swiss people in any way. It is an action to convince the Swiss government to outlaw this practice. Hopefully the majority of Swiss will agree with our request that their government take action. Animal cruelty can make us very angry but to be abusive will defeat our causes.

I live in Switzerland, i am NOT swiss, and we re talking about a SMALLL part of the rural inhabitants, as if one said that ALL the people in Greece ( where I have also lived ) killed their dogs/ cats by stoning them ( have seen it happen, saved 2!). BEFORE throwing stones, oneshould look into the matter carefully, not letting lowkey papers ( Blick has a worse reputation than the Un in the UK!) manipulate you,,,,

Completely agree with Keith. A "small" part is still way too many. It's absolutely disgusting and cruel. And I don't care if people argue that it's okay to eat chicken, so it should be okay to eat dog. Like people have mentioned, dogs have been "man's best friend" for centuries. Downright disgusting.

BTW, are there no humane societies or animal welfare in the entire country of Switzerland? Just sayin'!

I've already said before, I will never ever travel to Switzerland again. Visited twice for the Montreaux music festival, and I had no idea that this what they do. Wow...so much for being a neutral pristine watchmaking country! All animals are sacred; they're not here on earth to serve our needs of greed and gluttony. Our meat consumption is destroying the environment. We need to have a mindful eating habit.

Why not start eating humans. Some of them are much worse than animals.
