He went on to say that all animals are "fruit of the creative action of the Holy Spirit and merit respect" and that they are "as near to God as men are."The Holy Father reminded people that all living beings, including animals, came into being because of the "breath" of God. Animals possess the divine spark of life – the living quality that is the soul – and they are not inferior beings, as factory farmers, fur farmers, and others who exploit animals for profit would have us believe. *Pope Benedict was echoing official church teachings, as laid out in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states clearly that "Animals are God’s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory. Thus men owe them kindness.

I didn't know that the Holy Father JPII had so stated. Never having pets as a child I came to that awareness later in life. Being of the 'breath' of God explains why they can communicate so well with us, and are companions, rescuers and gift. Horrified that Switzerland allows this.

We are keepers of this earth & it is our responsibility to care for the animals that God has placed under our care. Animals used for human consumption should live a decent life & a quick & painless death!! Bigs & cats are not on that list! They are our companions & friends, the best!! Shame on you Switzerland!

There is no such thing as a painless death, Just because you don't see pain doesn't mean it's not happening inside someone (in this case, non-human animals). If I put you under anesthesia and then killed you you would think differently. Why not try not eating ANY animals. Then you will truly know what compassion is.

I live in Switzerland and my heart aches for what those people are doing to these animals. I do hope this soon will be forbidden by law. Most of Swiss people are not aware that this is happening, propably because it is a smaller, hilly part of Switzerland which is a bit "secluded" where this happens. Shame on those so called "humans" doing this to defenseless animals.

Having read some comments here I have to say that I don't understand why a whole country is measured for cruel acts that are done by a few people, mostly elderly people/farmer who kept up a tradition which have ended in many other countries and as well in Switzerland more than 100 years ago. Most Swiss people even haven't been aware that this is still happening and it was a huge shock to read this all in the papers. Why this cause is entirely remote from reality:
- Dog and cat meat has been many, many decades in Europe UDN consumed in Switzerland, especially in the country when it was famine and the peasants were very poor yet.
- That it is not explicitly prohibited is because no one would eat a dog or cat. This requires from us no laws.

Switzerland has the toughest animal protection law in the world of the other countries, especially the United States can only dream of. Unfortunately, we were ridiculed by the surrounding countries for this very strong law. The law includes, among others, the following points:
- Pet Protection - festgeschreiben Welfare in the Animal Protection Ordinance for each animal.

Farm animals:
- A proper care for all animals is prescribing
- Slatted floors in barns are prohibited
- Cages of chickens has been banned many years ago
- The import of egg powder and poultry products from countries with cages is not yet prohibited. unfortunally!
This is the cheap meat in our stores. Maybe we should boycott those countrys because of this kind of meat production ?

@ Monica, this is not aimed at the good people of Switzerland who do what they can for their pets. It is aimed at your Government who need to make it illegal to eat a pet. People like you who support this should also sign the petition.

I live in Switzerland, i am NOT swiss, and we re talking about a SMALLL part of the rural inhabitants, as if one said that ALL the people in Greece ( where I have also lived ) killed their dogs/ cats by stoning them ( have seen it happen, saved 2!). BEFORE throwing stones, oneshould look into the matter carefully, not letting lowkey papers ( Blick has a worse reputation than the Un in the UK!) manipulate you,,,,

A "SMALLL" part is still way too many. Just because there are assholes in Greece, doesn't make it okay for the Swiss.

Completely agree with Keith. A "small" part is still way too many. It's absolutely disgusting and cruel. And I don't care if people argue that it's okay to eat chicken, so it should be okay to eat dog. Like people have mentioned, dogs have been "man's best friend" for centuries. Downright disgusting.

Then DO SOMETHING about it! Standing by and letting this happen you are just as guilty as if you were eating these poor creatures! I know I am on many causes against animal cruelty in this country, and I donate and where I am needed I volunteer. You could be the one to put a stop to this! BTW, are there no humane societies or animal welfare in the entire country of Switzerland? Just sayin'!

Does not matter if it is a small community it should be banned and made illegal. Just because you don't eat dogs does not mean you should not force your government to make this illegal and a serious crime. Get up and do something. The whole world is embarrassing.

I only recently saw a photo of a defenseless dog in a "dog breeding stand" used for female dogs who won't "cooperate" with the greedy bastards that are profiting off her suffering. That evil device is more accurately called a "rape stand !" Too bad those greedy breeders haven't been shackled into the rape stand themselves so they can appreciate the horror the mama dog feels. Since profit (not animal welfare) is the driving force behind most breeders, many don't provide adequate medical care....

Since profit (not animal welfare) is the driving force behind most breeders, many don't provide adequate medical care. Maybe the mama dog is not "cooperating" with having sex on that particular day because her back, her vagina, or some other body part hurts. Maybe, like most human females, she does not want to have sex with just any dog. Who knows, but there is some reason why she is not "cooperating !"

I've already said before, I will never ever travel to Switzerland again. Visited twice for the Montreaux music festival, and I had no idea that this what they do. Wow...so much for being a neutral pristine watchmaking country! All animals are sacred; they're not here on earth to serve our needs of greed and gluttony. Our meat consumption is destroying the environment. We need to have a mindful eating habit.

While I agree with all sentiments, above, I do detest vulgarity. I plays no part in rational discussions. While I agree with all sentiments, above, I do detest vulgarity. I plays no part in rational discussions. Again, I share the sentimentality of this issue with all of you, but have you considered that Switzerland does not have the room for huge ranches for cattle that we have in the U.S.? As a boarding school student in Scandinavia, I was introduced to horse meat and honey. The idea of eating horse meat turned me off, as the horse culture in the U.S. bestows great honor and pride on these beautiful animals. However, I did try the summer sausage product a few times, and found the meat quite tasty. This product is not permitted in the U.S. However, as I live among East Africans and Arabs, I have tried camel, goat, and lamb meat. The camel ranches of Western Australia export the frozen meat to the U.S. and elsewhere. One of the lessons that I have learned over my years of traveling in foreign nations is that even though we may be of the same race or general culture of people from other countries, variations in what is acceptable are present. Certainly, I would never eat tiger meat, as outlawed but found in China and Hong Kong, and possibly elsewhere; and, I would not eat or kill another primate of any kind, with the exception of euthenizing it if it was severely ill and would not recuperate. Again, I share your sentiments and have signed the pledge; however, please look at the economics and the ancient culture of Switzerland. Measure and temper your words with repect when speaking or writing to someone whose behavior conflicts with your own morality and sentiments. You'll get a lot farther in your efforts, with diplomacy. As this issue will not be resolved for many years, best to not push the Swiss away with outrageous and disrespectful angst.
