Pope John Paul II taught love for animals .His Holiness proclaimed that "the animals possess a soul and men must love and feel solidarity with our smaller brethren." Animals possess the divine spark of life – the living quality that is the soul – and they are not inferior beings, as factory farmers, fur farmers, and others who exploit animals for profit would have us believe. *Pope Benedict was echoing official church teachings, as laid out in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states clearly that "Animals are God’s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory. Thus men owe them kindness.

I didn't know that the Holy Father JPII had so stated. Never having pets as a child I came to that awareness later in life. Being of the 'breath' of God explains why they can communicate so well with us, and are companions, rescuers and gift. Horrified that Switzerland allows this.

Very sad. Add Switzerland to the barbaric list of Countries that do not respect life, which shocks me. Aminal cruelty is across the world, but eating dogs and cats that feel safe with humans must fear them. This all makes me sick.

TO KAREN COLE: AS YOU SAY THIS IS THE STARK REALITY. SOMETIMES UNPLEASANT THINGS NEED TO BE SHOWN TO MAKE PEOPLE AWAREAND TO GET THEM TO SIGN A PETITION OR PARTICIPATE IN SOME WAY TO HELP STOP OR PREVENT A SITUATION FROM HAPPENING.

this sort of campaign is absoluletly ridiculous!
what is the difference in killing a dog or a pig, why is it ok to kill a cow and not a cat?
Just because we in the west keep cats and dogs as pets, why should we consider other countries that eat them evil or wrong? In India cows are considered sacred, does that then make us evil for eating them? I have read that pigs are much more intelligent than dogs and much more sensitive to pain and yet pig meat is hugely popular in the UK.
I am all...

I am all for eating a vegan diet, I am all for stopping cruelty to animals, but I feel that we should look closer to home before pointing the finger at other countries and making demands. These sort of campaigns just breed hostility and racism towards nations different to ourselves. If you really care about animals, stop eating them, if you care about them a little bit at least eat organic and free range.
