Pope John Paul II taught love for animals .His Holiness proclaimed that "the animals possess a soul and men must love and feel solidarity with our smaller brethren." He went on to say that all animals are "fruit of the creative action of the Holy Spirit and merit respect" and that they are "as near to God as men are."The Holy Father reminded people that all living beings, including animals, came into being because of the "breath" of God. Animals possess the divine spark of life – the living quality that is the soul – and they are not inferior beings, as factory farmers, fur farmers, and others who exploit animals for profit would have us believe. *Pope Benedict was echoing official church teachings, as laid out in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states clearly that "Animals are God’s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory. Thus men owe them kindness.

I didn't know that the Holy Father JPII had so stated. Never having pets as a child I came to that awareness later in life. Being of the 'breath' of God explains why they can communicate so well with us, and are companions, rescuers and gift. Horrified that Switzerland allows this.

What sort of feeble excuse is this, to the farmers who engage in this practise "You are all disgusting mentally defective Oafs if you believe in the medicinal powers of Dog/Cat meat. You live in Europe in the twenty first century not in some impoverished corner of the third world, pathetic Swiss Turds.

I am shocked after seeing that disturbing photo of poor dogs bundled in a cage, as well as in Korea the way they maltreat those poor frightened dogs, what has become of the human race, have the culprits forgotten about the Creator of all living things, the good Lord provide us with poultry, beef, lamb, fish(but only to be treated with respect before consumption. I hope and pray all countries involved in this inhumane practice will be 100% boikotted.

We should be learning to eat a more plant based diet and learn that anything with a FACE is a SENTINEL BEING! DOGS, CATS, COWS, PIGS, CHICKENS, AND MORE all feel the same feelings your child does. They all know fear, pain, suffering and abuse. It's just wrong!

Some parts of Europe are a bit backward with regard to animal welfare, and it should be for those nations which have humane policies, to put pressure on those which do not. I can understand some of the former Soviet countries lacking the organisational charities to begin to work on public concern, but not Switzerland to ignore this ill-treatment of dogs and cats, and their export to China. One cannot say that the Swiss are a starving people.
