Pope John Paul II taught love for animals .His Holiness proclaimed that "the animals possess a soul and men must love and feel solidarity with our smaller brethren." He went on to say that all animals are "fruit of the creative action of the Holy Spirit and merit respect" and that they are "as near to God as men are."The Holy Father reminded people that all living beings, including animals, came into being because of the "breath" of God. He went on to say that all animals are "fruit of the creative action of the Holy Spirit and merit respect" and that they are "as near to God as men are."The Holy Father reminded people that all living beings, including animals, came into being because of the "breath" of God. Animals possess the divine spark of life – the living quality that is the soul – and they are not inferior beings, as factory farmers, fur farmers, and others who exploit animals for profit would have us believe. *Pope Benedict was echoing official church teachings, as laid out in the Catechism of the Catholic Church, which states clearly that "Animals are God’s creatures. He surrounds them with his providential care. By their mere existence they bless him and give him glory. Thus men owe them kindness.

I didn't know that the Holy Father JPII had so stated. Never having pets as a child I came to that awareness later in life. Being of the 'breath' of God explains why they can communicate so well with us, and are companions, rescuers and gift. Horrified that Switzerland allows this.

I've been to switzerland twice for the Montreaux music festival. At the time, I had no idea that the swiss ate dogs. I just recently discovered this awful truth. I know that I will never step foot into switzerland ever again ~ for the same reason you will never see me travel to any of the Asian countries. Now they are not only known for great watches; they are also known for eating dogs! Sick!

Shamefully shocking that a "prestigious" country in Europe could sink so low. Evil does come in many disguises but this is still so repulsive. It doesn't matter what part of the country does this vile act, the laws must be abided. If the government can't protect these dogs then it must legislate against eating them so these people could be charged. Societies have to behave with decency and eating dogs falls well short of this. Daily we are condemning third world countries for engaging is...

Daily we are condemning third world countries for engaging is this sickening act and here we have Europe enjoying dogs on their dinner plates? I honestly don't know why human beings have become such unethical, callous people against the most compassionate, innocent canine beings.

I never planned on visiting Switzerland but all I know, it would definitely be a good reason for me not choosing to visit a place if it wasn't something clear cut, for sure....just as for any animal a place regularly serves. That is a scary thought.

I considered Switzerland a highly civilized country. Whe normal people keep silence? Where are intellectuals?
