This is so important. You don't have to look to far to realise that untreated mental illness can have devastating affects on whole communities and not just those directly impacted. Let’s prioritise taking care of our children, and giving them better opportunities for the future.

I would like to remove myself from this petition. We should be lobbying for funding for the excellent facility Time Out House in cairns that could provide for more youths if funded better. I have been in the adult ward and I don't believe any young person should be in there but I don't think we should burden them with the stigma of having been in a hospital mental health facility. And if not in time out house in some other community based program without some unprofessional professionals...

Hi Emma we need all of it for our young people. They will sometimes need acute care and will end up on the Adult Mental Health ward, or the Paediatric ward or the Maternity Ward or spend days in the Emergency Department. This petition caught the eye of the ABC 7.30 Report who pursued all angles including the closing down of Time Out program and house and I believe had some bearing on the fact that the house was given a reprieve for 6 months. (this was just before the program went to air). Ideally the acute care facility will not be in the shape of a ward at the hospital, a community based facility with good supports, programs, therapy and all they need to get well, that is youth focussed and orientated would be ideal of course. But until then, mentally ill young people will continue to be put in with mentally ill men and women most a lot older than them. I promoted the petition to save the Time Out program and will continue to do what I can to keep it going. But there will always be kids too young for the Time Out House (18+) and not all acutely unwell young people can be helped there.

As someone who has worked in the mental health system in the USA I agree you are right. Children need different treatment than adults. Outcomes can change a persons life as a child. Your government seems to really be crazy. Children in crisis probably have sexual abuse issues. Almost all of the adults whith chronic mental illness can trace it back to sexual abuse cas a child. The more severe and the longer the time of the abuse the more problems as an adult.

Mental health should be an absolute priority for our government and these facilities should be available in every state.
