Crazy; I wondered what happened to her in Austin. Was refreshing to see her deliver the weather. According to this article, she was fired for HER HAIR. http://www.statesman.com/news/business/kxan-accused-of-racial-discrimination-libel-in-2-s/nRn2N/

Here's the exchange:
A black female meteorologist has been fired from the ABC affiliate in Shreveport, La., she told Journal-isms, because she responded to a racial remark posted by a viewer on the station’s Facebook page.

Here's the exchange:
A black female meteorologist has been fired from the ABC affiliate in Shreveport, La., she told Journal-isms, because she responded to a racial remark posted by a viewer on the station’s Facebook page.

KTBS-TV’s action against Rhonda Lee followed a previous response by Lee to a viewer who questioned whether she should wear her short Afro, suggesting she put on a wig or grow more hair…

On Oct. 1, a viewer identified as Emmitt Vascocu wrote, “the black lady that does the news is a very nice lady.the only thing is she needs to wear a wig or grow some more hair. im not sure if she is a cancer patient. but still its not something myself that i think looks good on tv. what about letting someone a male have waist long hair do the news.what about that (cq).”

Lee replied the same day, “Hello Emmitt–I am the ‘black lady’ to which you are referring. I’m sorry you don’t like my ethnic hair. And no I don’t have cancer. I’m a non-smoking, 5’3, 121 lbs, 25 mile a week running, 37.5 year old woman, and I’m in perfectly healthy physical condition.

“I am very proud of my African-American ancestry which includes my hair. For your edification: traditionally our hair doesn’t grow downward. It grows upward. Many Black women use strong straightening agents in order to achieve a more European grade of hair and that is their choice. However in my case I don’t find it necessary. I’m very proud of who I am and the standard of beauty I display. Women come in all shapes, sizes, nationalities, and levels of beauty. Showing little girls that being comfortable in the skin and HAIR God gave me is my contribution to society. Little girls (and boys for that matter) need to see that what you look like isn’t a reason to not achieve their goals.

“Conforming to one standard isn’t what being American is about and I hope you can embrace that.

“Thank you for your comment and have a great weekend and thank for watching.”

Vascocu replied that Lee was right to be proud of who she is and that he is not a racist, but “. . . this world has . . . certain standerd (cq). if youve come from a world of being poor are you going to dress in rags?. . .”
Rhonda Lee is a 25-year veteran of the news industry.

MATRIX MENTALITY (only one "standard" of "beauty").
Judging from the FIGHT the Sister is displaying, I don't think she's going to be changing her appearance to "conform."
It's almost futile to respond to people who are so ignorant in their programming; nonetheless, to affect change it takes standing up to injustice and I applaud and support Ms. Lee for the sacrifice she's making, so that in the future people are considered for the content of character and depth of ability; NOT hair texture or skin color.

What is the obsession in this country with black women's hair? We are the only race of people that are constantly criticzed, ridiculed, and insulted because of our God given hair. Even some black women do it to other black women as in the case of Gabby Gifford. I'm seriously considering going Afro again as I did decades ago. I do not have to conform to anyone's standard of beauty. Get over it.

Wow, Rhonda you ROCK. I, too, eschew weaves, perms, and anything else that does not compliment my Beautiful Blackness of which I am deeply proud. What would the network say if they saw the mustache I wear proudly. I am very feminine, heterosexual, and refuse to succumb to the European model. This is only a glitch for greater achievement for you. Stay true to you and I am proud to be one of your SISTAHS. Zee Lewis, Oakland, CA.

This is terribly wrong, how they handled that. She didn't even come at the guy with rudeness or anything! I'd say she was very polite and respectful... I'd have had something a little different to say. >=/

She handled this with so much class and elegance.
And she really didn't have to--I would have been angry if someone said something similar to me.
She should not have been fired, PERIOD.

Louise Nelson-Patterson

She's was a good weather lady...hope she do get her job back....

Suzy Chambers Emmendorfer

Hire her back is she's still willing to work for you. Check with her first as she may have come to realize you are not the only game in town.
