Dhaka, Dec 16 (bdnews24.com)–A Dhaka court on Sunday remanded Rafiqul Islam Shakil, one of the key accused in the killing of Biswajit Das , on an eight-day police remand.

Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Erfan Ullah granted the remand after Inspector of the Detective Branch (DB) of the police, Tazul Islam produced him before the court with an appeal for 10-day remand.

Biswajit, a 24-year old trader, was beaten and hacked to death allegedly by activists of the Jagannath University (JnU) unit of the pro-Awami League student body Chhatra League during the opposition's countrywide road blockade on December 9.

Photos and video footage show Shakil hacking Biswajit with a machete.

With the help of the local police, the DB of the force in a special raid arrested Shakil from his relative's house in the Betagi Upazila of the Barguna district in the early hours of Saturday, by tracking his mobile calls. DB also recovered the machete from a shop in the JnU campus on Saturday evening.

Shakil's father Ansar Ali died of cardiac arrest on Saturday morning, an hour after he was nabbed by the police.

DB Inspector Tazul Islam told the court that Shakil admitted to the police of hacking Biswajit with a machete and later the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries.

"It's essential to take him in remand to know who accompanied him during the attack and upon whose provocation and instigation they committed the crime."

The Judge asked Shakil whether he had anything to say as he was weeping at the court dock. But Shakil shook his head in disapproval.

The Judge said, "Why you're weeping. Your father has died due to the sin committed by you."

No lawyer stood for Shakil during the hearing.

Shakil is a fourth-year student of Islamic History and Culture at the JnU. The university authority has already expelled him for his involvement in the killing.

So far 10 people have been arrested in connection with Biswajit's murder.

This incident took place while I was in Dhaka and I saw the whole footage on TV and it was absolutely abnormal and inhuman the way the Bengali youths were behaving. Hitting each other is one thing and beating someone up with sharp objects till death is another. Very sad and shocking.

Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir should also arrested and tried. He is the main culprit who ordered CL to go offensive. He's equally and same responsible as other killers. He has instigated the killers.
