We should start with a pro-rated pay scale based on days worked and bills voted on which would include a 25% pay cut immediately. Term limits only 2 years.

There should not be any bill tabled for an indefinite time. It should finally be voted on. There should be a limit to the number of vacations the House and Senate get.

I am less opposed to the salary they receive while in office... there are definitely expenses beyond the average american.. but once out of office, their retirement should be like all the rest of us.

How about NFL PLayers taking a huge pay cut-- and executives who don't deliver and still get huge paychecks. I think we should look beyond congress and start getting after the 1% group is more important- the disparity between the lower middle class and upper 1-2-3 % is getting larger every year. No trickle down economics- it trickles down into their back pocket or to build an overs seas factory in china. When we had trickle down years ago it was larger paychecks, better health care, a few...

When we had trickle down years ago it was larger paychecks, better health care, a few extra days off. This is not to be found- trickle down is dead we now have a totally new form of economics. Go after off shore bank accounts this is just down right wrong.

I agree with one person once they Leave the office they should not be allowed to keep getting money from the congress they should get there own way of money to pay for whatever they need.

I agree with the above statement for the most part. I do however disagree with part of the point leading to their pay & benefits. Being paid quadrupedal the salary of the average american is ridiculous, but they have to get paid more than the average American citizen to give an incentive to become a member of congress. I know the President gets paid $400,000/year + $50,000 spending credit. The national average wage index for 2011 is $42,979.61.

I THINK A MEMBER OF CONGRESS SHOULD GET PAID $100,000/YEAR NO MORE.
"I also realize that members of congress have college expenses, but so do many Americans. They should have to balance their spending with a budget just like everyone else. I don't think the president should get paid $450,000/year either. Give him a salary double the congressman $200,000. When the average federal employee gets paid more than the average american citizen worker we've got a problem (BALANCE PROBLEM) simple economics is to have more money coming in than going out, and the only way to balance this budget is to lower the wages of federal (GOVERMENT) employees.

Under a 1989 law, lawmakers are supposed to receive automatic cost-of-living pay hikes, but as Congress' approval ratings have fallen, lawmakers have routinely voted to reject the raise.
Lawmakers make $174,000 a year. They had already voted in September to block the pay raise through March 27, but President Barack Obama recently issued an executive order to implement it, along with a pay increase to federal workers.
