I'm seeing a lot of emotional responses to this petition. A knee-jerk reaction to "poor turtles being mistreated" and not anything really about the information presented. Nobody has looked at the other side of the story. First off, the turtles released into the wild are given a health screening before they are released (not mentioned here). Secondly, and most importantly, how is this any different from farming chickens or cattle? I'll bet half the people who signed this petition just had...

Secondly, and most importantly, how is this any different from farming chickens or cattle? I'll bet half the people who signed this petition just had lunch at Burger King or McDonalds without considering where their food comes from! What about the conditions those animals are kept in? I haven't heard too much about that lately. People, stop to think before you let your emotions carry you away.

You nailed it. Not to mention a good dose of ethnocentrism present in some of the petitions generally AND many of the comments, while self-reflection is absent.

Margaret Carrube. With man around all animals are endangered! All domesticated animals are also found in the wild, but not cow! Have you ever come across a wild cow or bull? For an infant cow's milk is as good as mother's milk. We Hindus believe that cow is a gift from god (aliens or whatever) and to be protected. Why not have a human farm for food?

Cody Panton, it is you that is remiss in the thinking department. We have the power to make this planet heaven or hell and with that power comes responsibility, noblesse oblige. Animals are truly innocent and deserve our respect. Sadly, too many people, like you are more interested in their own greedy ends. Will your emotions run away with you when l say that we are overpopulated, must be 8 billion by now. We have an endless source of meet that costs nothing and is easy to get at. Fyi, no...

Good luck! After living there for a year, I do not think those people will stop eating turtle meat. It is a way of life, just like we eat beef.

Thanks for sharing your feedback. We actually asked to see the number of turtles sold for meat, and the demand in the Cayman Islands has declined significantly because the price of farming turtles has risen. Only approximately 700 turtles (out of 5,000 in captivity) were sold for meat. Not a profitable business since the farm costs millions to operate and needs government subsidies to exist. We're hoping that the reduced demand and increase in public pressure to end their farming operation will make a difference!

we vsited the cayman turtle farm about 15 years ag and thought then it was disgraceful that on the one hand they promoted conservation and on the other hand killed the turtles for food and we ALL know there is NO humane way to kill a turtle, a disgrace.

It is distressing to hear this. Especially as there is no humane way to kill them. I'm not sure about killing them anyway. Vivienne Phimister, Newby, Vaudrey.
