Nitrogen is the worst pollutant of oceans. Victories at the local level set a precedent for others to follow. This needs to become a national cause, seeing as nitrogen pollution is affecting all of our coasts. This would be a great step forward.

Protect the human beings?? Human beings are the main source of all problems in this planet, whether its destroying animals, resources, the climate, and even ourselves. Thankfully our time on this planet will be relatively short in the big scheme of things.

Introduce biological pest control, a fish that feeds on the plankton and that is eaten by dolphins? solving the problems. Oh and for the record AGAIN AS MY COMMENTS WERE DELETED BY THE PAGE MAKERS!! the reason that farmers use nitrogen compounds to fertilise the land, is because farming rapes the nitrogen from the land. Nitrogen is the amino group of amino acids...which make proteins, which make plants, animals and enzymes, without nitrogen no-body gets any food. Does the river run past...

If theres an increasing amount of nitrogen in the river, its not from people using fertiliser on thier lawn, its from farming, and sewage plants that cant break down the nitrogen in urine. WHERE ARE THE NATURAL PREDATORS THAT FEED ON THE ALGAE? whenever a boom occurs in a species, its usually counteracted by a boom in natural predators? maybe the fish we catch in the river? which the dolphins would also feed on? you want less algae, you need more fish!!! think about it? read up??

Right, we are calling for a holiday from fertilizing lawns from June 1 to Sept 30th the time of year when day light length is longest, waters are hottest and algal blooms of slime are limited only by nitrogen. Go ahead and fertilizer the other 8 months. We are not talking about overall nitrogen running off the land into the sea, just the episodic season of June 1 to Sept 30. Algal blooms can release toxins and when blooms start to decay all of the oxygen is consumed. Either way the algae predators end up deader than the prey. And you've got a stinking noxious bay and beach. Ag businesses do not over fertilize by a factor of 5 because they know it is a waste of their money. Lawn owners would rather save time on summer weekends, save effort and save money by not spreading when it is not needed. Every penny lost by fertilizer companies is a penny saved by lawn-owners.

Rob Moir see Zombie Alligators on lake griffin Fla. Because of the "bloom" secondary to a Nitrogen overload & a over abundance of certain surviving fish "gizzard Shad", when eaten, cause a B-vitamin deficiency in anything on the food chain when consumed.

We might, for all I can be sure of, have worse problems, like world starvation. I can hardly suppose that the sevenfold increase in the world's human population since about the time of the Industrial Revolution has not been dependent upon mechanization.

Why?? Introduction of new species is a high gamble see eg the case with the biological pest control the cane toad in Australia plua a few hundred other places. I do not think this is the way to go. The problem is our overconsumption, use of everything and the ruining of balances in the natural environments. Why is there no fish then? Well guess what we overexploit them too!!

Well loretta, rather than just seeing what the facebook petition wants you to see, why not look at an ecology book. I dont suppose by any chance these rivers run near acres of farmland? this amount of damage isnt from a few people using nitrogen fertilisers on thier lawn, this is agricultural. And the reason farmers use it? because the crops pull nitrogen out of the soil either by autonomic or mutualistic nitrogen fixation. Nitrogen is the most abundant element in our biosphere. and completely essential for growth. also if theres a build up of aerobic algae in the river, introducing somel fish who would normally live thier and feed on the algae would soon sort it out. Speaking of which, if there is algae there that hasnt been a problem before, where are the natural predators? all fished out by people? the dolphins were feeding on something there? what was it? where is it now? when there is a huge boom in numbers of one species, its usually evened out by a boost in thier natural predators?
No no no no no, we dont need no education!!! we're american!!! there's dead dolphins... and we dig dolphins. kill the farmers who supply us with food!!! yeah grab your pitchforks!

In this case, the lawn owners are being duped by the fertilizer industry to spread the biggest bag of fertilizer one can find when it is totally not needed. No commercial ag business, no golf courses, no one else spreads fertilizer June 1 to Sept 30 because they no it is a waste of money. Yet children calling for a fertilizer holiday are shamed for promoting "totalitarianism." Good intentions, and good science researched by children, is turned to political rhetoric.

Jed Lye Your language is inappropriate for this Causes page. You speak down to other signers, you bully with things you think you know. Now you are saying nasty stuff about farmers when in the Indian River Lagoon they are not over fertilizing while lawns are getting five time as much as on ag businesses!
