Introduce biological pest control, a fish that feeds on the plankton and that is eaten by dolphins? solving the problems. Oh and for the record AGAIN AS MY COMMENTS WERE DELETED BY THE PAGE MAKERS!! the reason that farmers use nitrogen compounds to fertilise the land, is because farming rapes the nitrogen from the land. Nitrogen is the amino group of amino acids...which make proteins, which make plants, animals and enzymes, without nitrogen no-body gets any food. Does the river run past...

Does the river run past acres of farmland by any chance? Stop being sheeep and read an ecology book. You cant ban nitrogen, its the most abundant element in out biosphere. If theres an increasing amount of nitrogen in the river, its not from people using fertiliser on thier lawn, its from farming, and sewage plants that cant break down the nitrogen in urine. WHERE ARE THE NATURAL PREDATORS THAT FEED ON THE ALGAE? whenever a boom occurs in a species, its usually counteracted by a boom in natural predators? maybe the fish we catch in the river? which the dolphins would also feed on? you want less algae, you need more fish!!! think about it? read up??

nitrogen is a growing compound. type it into google. what the problem is. its being dumped here afterwards. so its not the nitrogen. its the people dumping it. out of season it is depremental to biological things. such as fish and plants..

Introduction of new species is a high gamble see eg the case with the biological pest control the cane toad in Australia. I do not think this is the way to go!!

Its a tough battle but environmentalist types must do what they can to help the dolphins, and manatees survive.

we do not need to pollute the cost; just to have a green lawn! omg

Rob Moir

Its better than that. We do not need to pollute the ocean to keep a green lawn. You can have a green lawn by fertilizing early in the spring, well before the blooms, and by using at least 50% slow release nitrogen

We are intelligent and resourceful enough to find a way to acheive a balance in the system, especially when it is an imbalance (ANOTHER ONE) created by humans for humans. Bottom line, the dolphins are suffering the life threatening side effects of nitrogen pollution in their environment. How long will it be before the pollution effects us..or is it already? We are in this chain of life too. It is heartbreaking to see what this problem is killing off the dolphin population, and that we are to blame for it.

Good point. The people of Indian River Lagoon are suffering. The County Commissioner i met with was most receptive to my request to reduce nitrogen pollution not because of the dolphins but because a constituent complained to him about the beach becoming slimy with algae and this ruining the experiences of her grandchildren. Further the local economy is dependent on tourists coming to enjoy the beach and recreate in the lagoon seeing dolphins, manatees and turtles. To see these animals...

Further the local economy is dependent on tourists coming to enjoy the beach and recreate in the lagoon seeing dolphins, manatees and turtles. To see these animals suffering in a degraded environment is bad for business. I was surprised by how many Canadians signed the petition until locals told me that Canadians are a vital part of the tourist dollars.

We are and I have never seen anything as beautiful as the dolphins in Florida. But as all things go, when the animal population is effected in such a way, they are the first to be. Sad that we let it get that far, and let the animals suffer-but we are all in this chain of life.

the real solution is promoted and also capacitation the farmland to use the natural fertilization.

For the Indian River Lagoon ecosystem it is simply too much urea nitrogen. Here the farmers are not applying to much fertilizer, some organic and some industrial N. To do so might burn the crops and is a waste of money if industrial or resources if organic. Our problem is with lawn owners because they do not know better and the industry wishes they use when not needed. I prefer food and farm products organically grown but the dolphins suffer no matter the form of urea nitrogen

Stop GMO farming in the area or upstream further, and I bet you will end the algae blooms.

During the summer months nitrogen is the limiting factor for algal blooms in the warm sunny water. Help us stop the ocean's worst pollutant nitrogen. GMO farming is a huge problem for humans worthy of all our efforts, but GMO not so much for marine life.

There are too many people in the world. The spread of communities west (of I-75) into the Everglades ("River of Grass") has to effect the seas around us. The 'glades are a natural filter into the seas, and it's been shrinking. There are just too many people, people! Do your part. Stop having so many babies! Use protection, something... change begins at home... seriously!

Rob Moir

We are simply asking people to stop fertilizing during the summer months when fertilizer washed by summer rains does great harm to Florida marine life. Baby don't pollute, irresponsible adults do. No matter the population we expect responsible stewardship of Florida. Yes building into the Everglades is bad. Instead of fewer births. Make more people live together on the far side of I-75 out of the Everglades.
