Anyone that wants students to carry weapons on campus is just plan screwed up in the head. I work on a college campus and I sure don't want people walking around with guns. I'm sure teachers don't want this either. Just think of someone pulling a gun because they got a bad grade. Then every one pulls their gun. Suddenly we have OK Corral in the class room. Oh wait, the polce should have been there to stop it. As far as police stopping crime, they can NOT be everywhere at one time. Maybe...

Maybe each student should have to pay for a police man to walk them around. Wait, noone wants to pay for this.

If people would just be aware of their surroundings instead of talking on the phone or texting, I bet a lot of the crime would be prevented. I see a lot of that every day, so you cant say that's not true.

I hate to burst your bubble but there are already people walking around your campus with weapons, you just don't know it.

Being aware... Of course I am already doing that. But should we walk around to the point of being paranoid? York is located at the Jane and Finch area, this area is so notorious for gang violence that it has it's own Wikipedia page. In a society where everyone is supposed to be treated equally, I also don't feel comfortable having to profile people based on appearance for fear of my life just because we are in a bad neighborhood. Sometimes there are places you have to go, you must walk...

Sometimes there are places you have to go, you must walk to the car if you want to go home, or the bus stop, or walk through campus to go from one building to another, there is only so much vigilance can do.

It is so sad that our kids really struggle to get the education that they need, and it is really sad that women are the pry today in our society. And what is really disgust me is that our government and state official wants to just sweep it under the rug.Its time that our state needs to understand that it is time to wake up and do something about.

It's time that the people wake up and understand that the police only show up after a crime has been committed to take a report or bring the body bags. Sometimes they can catch the perpetrator. But they don't 'protect' you. You have to learn to protect your self just as you have to prepare for disasters. You people need to grow up and learn to take of yourselves. Loose the idea that Big Daddy government will take care of you. It just isn't so.

What you say would only apply if taxes were extremely low. That is not the case in Canada. The level of social services you receive is a function of how much taxes you pay, and in Canada, tax is a significant portion of your income forgone. A police 1st year cadet in training makes 45K a year, I graduate with a business degree in June and my expected income is 30K, if they make more than me, I expect a return on my investment. We have well compensated officers but not enough of them. When...

We have well compensated officers but not enough of them. When you look at how much taxes Canadians pay from the average 24% income tax in addition the regressive 13% consumption tax where 2/3rds of Canadians live paycheck to paycheck, meaning 2/3rds of Canadians give roughly 34% or more of their income to the government, you realize that asking for a safe campus is not an unreasonable demand.

Ok, peps, just think about your own kids would you want them to be safe, I know you would these kids need your help by signing the petition. This is a problem that is happening throughout the world on campuses but we need to start taking back our safety from these criminals at large, that the system just slaps their hands and they are out to do this again.

Hi Gene, thanks for your support! The problem is York University is located in a neighborhood notorious for it's gang violence and that the majority of the time, the criminals are never caught or identified. Meanwhile, the libraries and other campus buildings are open to the public, thieves roam the libraries in search of unattended property and more hardened criminals have unrestricted access to the campus while security is spread very thin and in my opinion, why should armed criminals be intimidated by private security?

Students should be able to attend schools paying for the right to an education while being kept safe.

Nowadays, the only place that maybe safe is the cemetery. People working in the government are getting lazy and less idealistic. Most of the times, they follow our leaders, more talk!

Allowing students and employees with concealed carry permits to carry would do a lot to convince criminals to go elsewhere. When you advertise you have disarmed law abiding citizens you've created an "unarmed victim zone. Criminals are predatory animals, they will not attack if they believe their intended victim may be able to cause the perpetrator harm. They will look elsewhere.

All weapons are illegal in Canada. That includes blades, tazers and guns. In fact, in Canada, if someone tries to rob you and you overpower and detain them or injure them, you can get arrested and charged with assault.

No, not an option for so many reasons. Most importantly, because York U is in Canada where it is virtually impossible to have a handgun.

As a graduate of York U., I am deeply saddened by these reports. I can recall nights when I stayed at the Main Library until closing, or stayed elsewhere on campus studying and had to walk out the doors of Vari Hall! Is the university unable to find suitable security personnel to hire? I stayed long past the time for Student Escort to assist me, as I studied inn History Dept. and had the good fortune of having Campus Security rescue me and take me to my Assiniboine apt. Can the campus be enclosed, despite the wide area it covers, I wonder?

It might be a great idea, That maybe for a limited time or just's Possibly a portion of of each month that all traffic fines and are violations that accumulate fines, should go to the peace officer's funds to hire more officers or two equipped officers with surveillance equipment to prevent any further personal injuries or violence towards anyone. Just the little motivation to make their force stronger and larger so maybe we could have a better and safer community.
