My house in oak beach had 5 1/2 feet of water inside. The ocean came in to the house right in front of me. I don't know if it weren't for fire island, if my house would still be standing. The dunes, along with the east lanes of ocean parkway went out into the ocean. We have all been so blessed to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the united states. The dunes, along with the east lanes of ocean parkway went out into the ocean. We have all been so blessed to have some of the most beautiful beaches in the united states. I think we just assume it is always going to be there. It's our obligation to sign this petition, not only for the selfish reasons of enjoyment on the beach, but to protect the homes of our fellow long islanders. We never know when another storm could arise and we must remember the power of water, the great ocean we all love so much. Ready and willing and able to do my part where fire island is concerned. Please won't everyone help, everyone sign the petition?

NY sends thanks to the Firefighters from New Orleans who came to Staten Island to help our Firefighters clean up. You have already proven that we can rebuild.

The problem lies with rebuilding for what? They know the oceans are rising every year making each inevitable storm as bad or worse!

So wait and see after rebuilding hope for the best another few decades and let the grandchildren have the problem when we are all dead. It needs total redesign for any rebuild! Nature is always changing only man thinks they can keep things the same change with the change in any rebuild or get swept away with the next super storm.

It is vital that we do not close up the inlets formed by SANDY. You must understand that tons of raw sewage have been and continue to be dumped into the channels and bays. If we close the inlets the sewage will not get diluted with ocean water exchange. Think about real estate values of the houses on the bays and south shore coast lines. We must think of the greater good and that is not closing up the inlets for the few on Fire Island....they should not be living there in the first place.....

I am no expert but I don't think rebuilding dunes is going to protect the shoreline from future super storms. Climate change will cause more storms like Sandy. In addition to the storms some scientist are predicting a rise in sea level of up to 18 feet in the next two hundred years or so. Greenland is loosing 100 billion tons of ice per year, CO2 is now 394 ppm and global temperature has risen 1.5 degrees F since 1880. No amount of dunes is going to protect from what is to come. All coastal cities around the world must be preparing for floods, and storm surge on a massive scale. It could probably be prevented and investments to protect the forests, the sea and the atmosphere must be undertaken by all governments concerned.

fford to pay any for the high on the hog excesses of the privileged few that levied exorbitant sums for repairs and necessary services.High insurance or lack of flood as such, taxes, food and transportation slowly but surely hollowed out a hole in our accounts..I have always loved the beauty that the island has offered when not being squeezed wrenched, gauged and exploited by many of its inhabitants.I say that if there are people that want to save their own status and well being as home and business owners on the Fire Island it's up to themselves to pay for rebuilding and bare the brunt for long term erosion prevention and for protection out of their own pockets in the form of higher taxes than for everyone else to pay for it.Fire Island has been around for hundreds of years and will continue to do so if nature permits. If not, then not.In the mean time let those that most profit and reap the benefits from being there foot the bill for it's survival.
