Scrapping the Disability Living Allowance, Council Tax Benefit, the Social Fund, Community Care Grants and draconian sanctions on Job Seekers Allowance in the Welfare Reform Act 2012 are all part of the neo-liberal economic and neo-conservative political strategy of reversing the social achievements of organized labour in the 20th century and further restoring the class power of the capitalist classes over the working classes. This is the same agenda we are seeing in Greece, Portugal and Spain, it’s all part of a global capitalist response to the financial crisis of 2008 and to the general crises of capitalism which has been structural and part of the ecological limits to exponential growth experienced since the 1970’s. We now face a choice between the barbarism of 19th century capitalism or socialism as the social-democratic phase of welfare-capitalism in the developed bourgeois democratic states draws to an end.
