I have mixed feelings about this. There are some men and women who are incarcerated for non-violent crimes. I would happily sign this petition regarding violent offenders. I think it's criminal that they are able to terrorize their victims from prison. I would be horrified to be a family member or a victim of such a terrible crime and find out this was happening. I think it's another violation to them and criminal to allow this to happen. With this being said, we also have men and women that...

With this being said, we also have men and women that are incarcerated for non-violent crimes such as sex work, financial fraud, drug possession etc., that will be getting out of prison and it is a way for them to communicate and keep up with their children, family and friends. Their circumstances have contributed to where they are (poverty, illegal immigration, addictions etc.) but if we treat them as monsters then we as a society are judging them and will never continue to understand the social circumstances some people find themselves in and will also be punishing their children and family as well. And of course there is the other side of the argument about jail being a 'punishment' and face booking is hardly punishment is it? There are people in our own communities who cannot afford a computer and NOT in jail. Tough issue.

If a crime is comitted a choice to do so was made. If they have litte else in prison it's because they made a choice to break the law and a person is dead because of it or severly injured. The system is already over burdened without having to "monitor" an inmates Fb activity. If inamtes can get access to Fb and cell phones under current conditions how well do you think that would work?

I am sorry for your loss Amber's mom. I can't even imagine what that would be like and think it's so wonderful that you are doing something in her memory, honoring it in such a positive way. Good luck to you and your family.

Give me a break Brian.. "poor prisoners" THAT is what is wrong with the justice system as it exists.. people continue to prey on the public because it is a JOKE when they are actuallly arrested and charged..so there isnt any fear for doing the crime.. they know that the justice system as it it exists will most probably NEVER punish them. They get 2, 3, 4 years for murdering someone.. supposedly a life sentance.. but they never serve it cause the prison system as it exists is a joke!

Bethany, I grew up in poverty.. In the projects.. I was still taught right from wrong and made something of myself because of it, and I have NEVER done anything illeagal... it is a cop out to say they only do the crimes becuase of society.. If they are addicted, they chose to become addicted.. stop making excuses for peoples lack of self control. It isnt societies fault prople make the choices they do, it is time people take personal responsibily for what they do and stop blaming somebody else all the time.

All I am saying Deanna is that EVERYONE has a story. Do we forget about the 'addicts' in society and dismiss them because of "their lack of self control"? How does that play out for their children and their children's children? Do we dismiss them as well when they are born with physical, social and/or cognitive disabilities as a result of the addiction and put them in institutions too while their mother's are imprisoned? Good for you for overcoming obstacles in life. If only others were as strong and resilient.

If you really think addiction is about "lack of control" then you really don't understand the issue. Tell that to the woman who grew up with alcoholics and a step-father who raped her multiple times with no protection from her family who knew, and who learned early on from her mother the numbing effect alcohol has versus feeling the emotions and dreaming about her molestation. Not drinking for her is not an option because when she doesn't the pain is unbearable…or at least that's how she...

Of course hold the person responsible, but at least address the issues in society rather than dismiss their effects and blame it on the person's inability to cope or have "self control".

My daughter was murdered. This argument is ridiculous. Unless you are a victim yourself or related to a victim, you will NEVER UNDERSTAND regardless of how much you try to rationalize your opinion with some kind of social rants about rights of prisoners.

Bethany for the record KILLING someone with a DUI in California is NOT a violent crime so limiting it to violent offenders in the eyes of the law would still allow my daughters killer access to Facebook.

Unfortunately this is probably not the first time she has been guilty of DUI... maybe the first time she was caught or punished or drew attention to herself; buthistory shows, when an ac cident involving DUI happens it's not the first time the driver has been under the influence. I am very humbled by the fact that i "escaped" any consequences of my foolish youth...there but for the Grace of God! I never hurt anyone, but i was doubly blessed not to have done.

Hey here they are letting go third offense DUI's. with no time. I don't understand no inmate should be allowed social access period. Including house arrest. Only visitation. Tempy if you need to vent than vent. What ever helps you. I notice that it's hard to heal inside until truths are exposed. With out that then throw out the judges or the system completely and let society run wild. Maybe look into the judges history? Does he/she have any DUI record. I know I'm good. Always pull a judges personal record. It can recuse or even suspend a judge instantly. Pull in a judge that will follow the rules. Maybe that can help.

Your story is heart breaking Ann.. it's incredible that most times in any collision with a drunk driver, the innocent get hurt.. not the drunk.. and then our system treats them with kid gloves *because* they were drunk, calling it an illness.. not a choice. Drinking to excess and then getting in an automobile should be treated as full blown second degree murder.. as bad as if they took a gun and killed someone.. an auto is weapon in a drunk drivers hands and should be treated as such.

Speaking from someone who works in a prison… they do get cable TV in their cells, a recreational gym, basketball court, baseball field, library, and school. A few selected inmates in the school do have limited access to the internet, which is ALWAYS monitored.

But I have learned over time to maintain order in our prison system it is very important to hold some type of leverage over their heads. How do you punish those that are already being punished... You give them those special perks, such as cable TV, and take it away when they break the rules. The prison I work in has 1,300 inmates and at times only 20-30 Correctional Officers. That is why that “leverage” is so important, not so much for the safety of the inmates, but the safety of the staff.

Yes, it doesn’t seem right when there are inmates serving only 12 years for murder, or a rapist serving 4 years while their cellmate gets 8 years for possession of narcotics. In Minnesota they only serve 2/3 of their actual sentence and 1/3 on supervised release. And yes, it is true ex-inmates have walked up to our entrance requesting to come back… Therefore, in my eyes it can be said there’s something wrong with our criminal justice system. But until we get our state to supply us with the funding to hire more Correctional Officers, we will need to give them those special “perks” to maintain our safety…

I do understand that, I guess I am thinking that maybe an island in the middle of the ocean, surrounded by sharks, and they are dropped by helicopter (the ones that really deserve it), they would have to hope the other inmates are able to teach them how to live, because they will be there the rest of there lives. That would be fine with me. I do understand what you are saying though Brandon, but, as a regular human being, not a corrections officer, do you think that idea would be good?

I'm sorry. Our criminal justice system is just too flawed for me to believe that every prisoner is guilty. I was told, not very long ago that there are 3 truths in our criminal justice system. The truth doesn't matter. You are only entitled to the justice that you can afford. The prosecutor always wins. And experience has taught me that this is true. So no, I can't take away the voice of any felons in lieu of taking away the voice of the innocent.

Prisoners should not have access to the internet and a lot of otherthings. They are in prisoner for a reason, not to have the comforts that law abiding citizens have. They are in there for punishment! Please let us do wahtever we can to bring more justice to our justice system. My son Tyler Head, did nothing wrong and was killed by an impaired driver, the sentence that he is serving is only 1 year with 3 years probation! This is not right!

Jeanette Elizabeth Mobbley

I agree the people in Prison shouldn't be allowed on Facebook. They shouldn't have access to the internet they do these things and more. Do 1/2 the time that they're in there and then get out and have the same things that the people who don't get into trouble get.
