Compared to the importance of this cause, what follows is but a minor irritation. But the NYPD can be so petty at times. I mean, back when the standard procedure for catching an NYU student buying a lousy dime-bag in or near Washington Square Park was a $50 fine, written up, that could be paid within 2 weeks, I got nabbed returning home to the East Village after an upscale bartending shift, naturally wearing a tuxedo. After 8 hours on the cold steel floor of a windowless van (until they rounded up enough other criminals) I was taken to Police Plaza Number One, the whole booking procedure and kept the maximum 72 hours before being presented in front of a Magistrate...by this time a Night Court. When the Judge heard the charges he let fly at the ADA, pointing to a pile of serious briefs on murders, kidnappings, manslaughter, extortion, blackmail, fraud, serious cases that he could not get around to hearing because the Prosecutor's Office was filling his limited time with bullshit like this! He turned to me and actually APOLOGIZED, ordering the bailiff to un-cuff me and release me. 3 days and 3 nights. BULLSHIT, all around.
